Book Description

December 30, 2011
Amazing Gifts: Stories of Faith, Disability, and Inclusion is a new publication by noted religion writer Mark I. Pinsky. Pinsky has gathered stories from churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples across the country, "stories of people with disabilities and the congregations where they have found welcome." He has taken special care to include the widest range of disabilities, including non-apparent disabilities like lupus, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, depression, and mental illness. There were 54 million American with disabilities as of 2000, and that number is now being swelled by wounded warriors from the Afghan and Iraq wars and an aging population.
The author emphasizes that his purpose is to not to write a resource manual on accessibility and inclusion. Rather, Pinsky seeks to share stories of how people with disabilities have experienced their faith in the context of their disability, and how congregations have gained when they value the gifts that people with disabilities bring along. "This book," notes the author, "is for congregational leaders and others who may have no expertise or personal experience with disability, but who make the congregational decisions about accessibility and inclusion."

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a remarkable book, as practical as it is inspirational! As a local church pastor, I need to learn from the examples of other faith communities and the personal stories of inclusion. Thank you for touching my ministry and heart with a guide book on real love in action! --Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor, Northland--A Church Distributed

Amazing Gifts is a rare book. Many of the stories in it brought a tear to my eye, a smile to my lips, and buoyed my heart with examples of the creativity and goodness of people. Above all, it is practical book offering concrete examples of how we all benefit from making our religious communities more inclusive and how any one of us can take effective action for inclusiveness. --Rabbi Mordechai Liebling, Director Social Justice Organizing Program, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College

These intriguing stories about the church reaching out to the disabled and the disabled reaching back opened my eyed to a world of compassionate ministry that most of us have overlooked, This book is for those who are serious about doing something about those whom Jesus deeply cares for. I wish I had read it earlier in my ministry. --Jim Henry, Pastor emeritus, First Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida and former president, Southern Baptist Convention

More About the Author

Longtime religion writer Mark I. Pinsky (b. 1947)was a free lance writer before working for 25 years for the Los Angeles Times and Orlando Sentinel. His primary specialties are religion, politics (Sun Belt evangelicals) and popular culture (The Simpsons, Disney, South Park, etc.) "You can find God in the funniest places -- and where you least expect."
Since leaving the Sentinel in 2008, Pinsky has concentrated on books, free lance writing (USA Today, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, etc.), college lectures around the country, and adjunct teaching at the University of Central Florida. He has held numerous fellowships, including Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, University of Cambridge (Templeton) and Duke University Divinity School.
For the moment, he is trying to figure out how to make his first three books available online(he owns the electronic rights), and to find a publisher for his latest nonfiction book, "Unfinished Business: The True Story of an Appalachian Cold Case Murder." His literary agent is Gail Hochman, of Brandt & Hochman. This book represents a return for Pinsky, who covered numerous capital murder cases, including serial killer Ted Bundy and Green Beret Capt. Jeffrey MacDonald.

The book Amazing Gifts. . . is a look at what faith communities around the country are doing to include those with disabilities. The forward by Ginny Thornburgh and the stories that follow set a new standard for what those of us with disabilities should expect as we navigate in the world. And this expectation should be extended beyond faith communities to all organizations, public and private. This book takes us from the basic expectations of the Americans with Disabilities Act to the ideal of inclusion.
