This review is from: Soundtrack (DVD)
I completely disagree with the harsh sentiments delivered by th first reviewer below. This movie is not at all just a grotesque horror flick -- it goes far, far deeper than just what's on the surface.

I do, however, agree that you must be an avid lover of art in order to appreciate this art film.

The movie itself is actually a take from Grimm's Fairytales and it is a multilayered post-modernist work. There are overarching themes of love and possession; of schizophrenia and psychological disorders (being trapped). Almost everything in this movie is symbolic -- from refusing to leave the nest to being silenced by losing a tongue. It is an artistic masterpiece -- despite the morbidity that surrounds it. Essentially, it is a microcosm of life in that it captures birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and death in one single shot. The nest represents the womb, in which Sugizo cosntantly curled up in a fetal position. The images of childhood flicker through endlessly. His unsteady progression into childhood, along with his forbidden romantic feelings for his sister ties into the confusion of adolescence -- and then there's all that death, which is obvious symbolism in itself.

True Sugizo fans should definitely purchase this. His acting is raw, completely sliced to the core and without that smooth veneer of Hollywood films. Movies are constantly presented with perfect lines, without the hiccups of -real life-.

Though I must admit there are moments in the movie that we could've completely done without (i.e. Misa burning to death was a horrible, underbudgeted scene) the acting itself is intense, raw, and Sugizo's performance is everything I'd have expected of him.

If not a little more. It certainly shows that he can cry on demand.

Soundtrack is a very profound movie and unless you are a provactive thinker who is willing to delve into the subtextual themes underneath the surface of this movie, you will not appreciate it.

However, if you are a deep individual who can truly digest and understand classic authors such as Virgil, Homer, Shakespeare, and Walcott -- you'll have no problem truly appreciating this film.
