Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-This book packs a lot of information into clear, short chapters that are chock-full of facts, action, and cool language. (Astronauts and cosmonauts are referred to as 'nauts throughout.) After a few introductory sections on outer space, the International Space Station (ISS) is introduced. Dialogue bubbles, sample entries from the ship's log, and abundant photographs provide evidence of what the ISS scientists experience. One picture depicts Mikhail Tyurin giving Frank Culbertson a microgravity haircut; another shows James Voss using an exercise bike. Favorite down-time activities (music, Earth gazing, etc.) add a personal dimension to the profiles of the travelers. A section on space science explains some experiments conducted at the station. Sidebars on softly hued backgrounds enhance the text. Activities sprinkled throughout include directions for a poppin' rocket, a recipe for a soup containing freeze-dried ingredients, and directions for growing crystals. A "Secret Language of Space" guide will help readers to know their HEDS from their FEAT. Loaded with much, much more, this fine, chatty effort is irresistible.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI

Review

The interesting information and great photographs make this book one that is bound to be an interstellar hit with your readers.

This book is not a text but it would be an excellent reference for a unit on space in grades 4 through 8. It would also be excellent for personal reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing photos and interesting space facts, May 3, 2004
Fun book design, informal text, and excellent photographs give a clear and interesting introduction to life on the International Space Station (ISS). Answers questions like how do astronauts wash and go to the bathroom in space. Gives advice to astronaut wannabes like study math and science and go to college (and 64% of all American astronauts were involved in scouting). There is considerable talk about physical effects of zero gravity. A real problem is bone loss so the astronauts exercise for a couple of hours everyday. I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about the ISS and what it is like to live in space for extended periods of time. Includes several activities to try at home and an index. 5.0 out of 5 stars Space station explained, September 29, 2010

This review is from: The Amazing International Space Station (Paperback)
I have a number of my Amish friends interested in the International Space Station. I frequently print out the sighting schedule for them. However, it has been very difficult to explain what they are seeing and what the nauts are doing in the station. This publication covers a number of topics in broad terms at a level that my friends and I can understand. I found it very interesting and believe that my friends will too. I am looking forward to passing this publication on to a family that has 6 children, ages 5 to 12. I'm sure they will read it cover to cover. Included are many pictures.
