Book Description

The Amazing Journey of a Relationship

When I left my husband in the fall of 1988, I never meant to look back. I was filled with pain and it was all his fault. If I could only get away from him, then my life would be okay. Michael was clueless. He told me later—much later—that at the time, he thought I was crazy and he immediately began looking for answers for me. After all, I was the one causing the pain right then, thus our problems were all my fault.

This book is about what happened to those problems—how day by day, step by step, we untangled the issues and worked on them. The thoughts and ideas presented herein come from New Hope Family Life Center (New Hope), a place where Mike and I took refuge as we struggled to understand ourselves and our relationship. New Hope offered us a safe place to cry, scream or just be in pain. We didn’t have to put on a face and pretend that nothing was wrong. We could be ourselves and through that openness, we attended monthly meetings, individual counseling, group therapy sessions and spiritual guidance that led us to our truth. We remarried each other two years after our initial separation and subsequent divorce. Mike and I divorced each other because we didn’t have the knowledge and tools that we needed to make our relationship work. That knowledge and those tools are presented within these pages. For example, in the first chapter, I talk about the stages of a relationship—what they are and how best we can work through them to get to our ultimate goal—partnership. I discuss the war zone of identity and how many couples hit the wall of identity and divorce each other instead of working through the pain to find their truth. In the second chapter, I talk about how men process through their thinking and women process through their feelings and how important knowing that is to good communication in a relationship. In chapter three, I talk about love being a choice, not a feeling. In our culture, we are taught that we will grow up, meet our knight or princess, fall in love and live happily ever after. Nowhere in that scenario, do we hear that things might get a little tough and—forget about love—we might not even like our spouse anymore. Love, at that point, becomes a choice. In chapter four, I discuss growing up and how the bad life experiences can become garbage inside of us that skews our vision. Luckily we can get rid of this garbage (and we all have it), but we have to know how. I will give you the tools to empty out your garbage can. Then, have you ever thought about yourself as an authentic person? In chapter five, we’ll talk about what that means for you as an individual and how authenticity affects a relationship.

This book is called The Amazing Journey of a Relationship because it was a part of our life journey that changed us forever. We were on a path that led straight to divorce and we didn’t know how to change directions. At New Hope we learned twelve new ideas about relationships that helped us choose a different path…a path to individual wholeness and partnership strength. Each chapter of the book is set up in such a way that the reader follows along on our journey. In the first part, the reader is given one to four of the new ideas that we learned. They are called steps because every traveler knows that the right steps are necessary to get past barriers on a journey. The second part of each chapter takes the reader inside a meeting or counseling session at New Hope where real people use the steps on their own journey. Then every chapter ends with several journey questions which allow the reader to explore further how each step helped the characters to move forward on their journey. The journey stories used are real to the following extent…they are composites and the names, identifying features and circumstances of the clients have been altered to protect their confidentiality and privacy.

More About the Author

Connie Slagle Nolan was born in 1951 to Wilma and Philip Slagle in Batesville Indiana. She grew up and graduated high school from Brookville Indiana in 1970. Connie received a BS from Northern Kentucky University in Marketing and was pursuing a career in the marketing field when she and her husband separated in 1988. Two years later--following a nasty divorce, lots of therapy, a reconcilation and eventual remarriage to each other, Connie jumped ship into social work where she got her MSW and then began sharing with others what she had learned about relationship problems and personal growth issues.

Connie continues to work PRN at a busy hospital in Northern Kentucky where she helps folks work through issues--one problem at a time. She also writes articles for her blog that is---and probably will be for some time--in the developmental stage.

Leisure time is spent with her husband Michael and their ten year old yellow lab, Mick, as they hike the hills around Northern Kentucky for eight months of the year and explore the beaches of southwest Florida the other four months.
