Can we say "fanservice"?,
By Concerned Consumer "Jamie P" (Everett, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amazing Nurse Nanako - Memories of You (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Amazing is right. No, not the plot! No! Not the artwork, either! Amazing refers to the physics-defying properties of Nanako's chest. This disc introduces us to the overly-endowed Nanako, our heroine, and her life as a "nurse". She jiggles. She bounces. She falls down, and lands so that her assets are displayed to their fullest potential. If you're looking for harmless fanservice, hooboy, have you found it. The problem is, this disc contains the first 2 OAVS of a 6 OAV series, and as such is all set-up for the overall plot. So, the actual content isn't that enthralling. We meet the characters. We learn little bits about them. We see where Nanako works. We learn little bits about that. While not by any means a bad start, this is just the start. It's interesting, it's funny, and it's full of animated female flesh, but it's not enthralling or entrancing. On the technical side, this disc is great. The picture is clear, the packaging is well done, and the sound is as best as can be expected from the standard mix. The menu is also deserving of note, for the rather amusing animation. The are somewhat limited, but the Nanakotronic music video was pretty amusing. This disc isn't for everyone, and isn't one that will be considered by any means a classic. On the other hand, it's not a waste of your time to watch, and it holds much promise for the rest of the series. If you have the time and money, at least check it out.

I won't bother to criticize "Nanako" for being sexist; a sexist anime could very easily be funny, or exciting, or interesting. Unfortunately, "Nanako" is not that hypothetically amusing, thrilling, engrossing sexist anime, but an incredibly dull sexist anime. The jokes (mostly tired slapstick showing how stupid Nanako is or how bad a cook she is, or scenes of Nanako's boss angrily beating her or Nanako screaming in fear when confronted by aliens or wild animals) are not funny, the action really drags, and the plot almost seems non-existant. (Perhaps it picks up in the later episodes; this disk has two episodes.) As for the art, Nanako herself is sort of charming, but the other character designs are as forgettable as the bland personalities affixed to them."Nanako" has a real problem with tone; mostly, it is supposed to be a comedy, I suppose, but the violence can be very graphic, and there are overtones of X-Files/Evangelion "secret government experiments involving aliens" which don't fit in very well with the endless scenes of Nanako's breasts bouncing as she falls down. The best part of the disk are the episode closing credits in which we see Nanako doing various exercizes; Nanako is a nice drawing stuck in a terrible lemon of an anime.

I first saw a preview for Nanako Kaitai Shinsho (Amazing Nurse Nanako) on my region 2 Sol Bianca DVD imports back in March. The preview is the same one included as an extra on this DVD. No scene was without Nanako's ample breasts jiggling about. If you want to slam Nanako for this, you really need to think before you buy movies next time. While very silly and fluffy, this first DVD is all set up for the real story to come later. And like Battle Atheletes, Nanako vacillates between being slapstick silly and drop dead serious. And while not at good and Battle Athletes, is still a lot of fun to watch. This disc includes the first two of six total episodes.

Ugh....So Bad,

The animation is VERY cheap, the main character whines constantly until you just wish she would die, and there are probably only 3 or 4 good laughts on this DVD. Somehow, I think this series could have been good, but it just isn't. The voice actress who plays Nanako is just plain annoying. If you're looking for fan service, you'll find some, although not much. Don't buy this DVD, maybe rent it.

I have a resin statue of Nanako, so i think that shows that I like her alot. The character that is. The first two episodes of the series are not that great, but have a few moments that are wonderful. The series is centered around The happy, sweet Nanako, the stern Dr. Jyoji Ogami, A Chinese doctor, a witch, and a Shinto Priest. Nanako works for Dr. Ogami in a duel postion as a Nurse and a maid. She also seems to be something more than a normal buxom girl because many orgamnizations have their designs on her and also. In one of Dr. Ogami's photo albums there are several pics of Nanako that date several years back, the thing is Nanako can't be more than 24 at the oldest. The first episode is pretty bland, lots of scenes of Nanako's breats bouncing and several shots up her skirt. Bringing Dr. Ogami his lunch she gets trapped inside a lab where an experiment is being performed on a being called Green. Dr. Ogami defeats the alien with a fire extinguisher aided by Nanako's cold. The second episode we find our group in the moutains. There is quite a humorous scene about Vitamin C, I am serious. Nothing much really happend in this episode we get to see the bouncy Nanako go through alot of training with the Priest Genki, and we get to see an entertaining chase scene when Dr. Ogami finds out that Nanako has been talking behind his back. It is pretty funny. The only complaint I have is that Dr. Ogami is too rough with Nanako, it almost borders on abusive. If you see the DVD you will know what I mean.

I wasn't expecting the sub-plot about Nanako which actually puts this over in the Steel Angel Kurumi/Chobits school of unreal girls(Only seen 1 Saber Marionette, so I can't include it). Dr. Kyoji is pretty cute for a mad scientist(ok, not so mad as obsessed). Nanako gets a tad annoying at times with how incredibly thick she can be, but it's a fun show. Yes, Dr. Kyoji's abusive, but there's a reason for his pushing her(& it's not to cut her up--he gave up on that idea apparently). In fact, some of it seems to be humor(of the Princess Bride's "I'll likely kill you in the morning" Dread Pirate Roberts mode)I bought the set & watched them all together so it makes sense. Want to think as well as laugh, get Soul Hunter. This one's just a fun, sweet show about a boy, his favorite maid, & a pinky-promise to save her.

I'm open to a lot of things but I don't enjoy watching a character getting physically and emotionally abused. I bought this DVD knowing full well that it would be chalk full of fan service. In fact there's very little fan service. Poor Nanako is sobbing through most of the show, she's an emotional wreck and after you see the way she's treated you'll know why. The character design is poor, the abusive doctor is the only creative looking character. The credits are more amusing then the show itself. I'm tempted to watch more in the hopes that the doctor and his house guest get killed violently for their behavior. I don't recommend it to anyone, and I'll likely sell it eventually.

While I can see why people may not like A.N.N. very much, I found it to be watchable. It is pretty funny and has asomewhat interesting (if yet unrevealed) plot, cool music, funny characters, and some pretty decent art (if not animation). However, it is obvious this title is geared mainly at male audiences. In the first episode there is some almost-ultraviolence, and in the second their is some nudity. That may not sound so bad, but I have to tell you that every scene that features Nanako has fan service. If your 14 or up, I recomend this to you. But parents, this one's not for the kiddies.

True I should have figured that the show was not going to be that great by the other reviews, but there was nearly no character development at all. It was also hard to figure out why any of the c haracters were there unless you went and researched the series online. Not one of pioneer's better works.
