5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good
This movie is better than I expected. I thought it would be really corny and dumb. But it was really good actually.

The Chinese actors in this movie really are speaking Mandarin. A good friend of mine who is Chinese was watching this movie with me, and translated the Chinese dialogue for me. It was authentic and fit with the movie. For instance, when the girl...

Boy this was awful. Really really bad. I think the scene that best embodies how unrealistic and moronic this film truly is, would be the one in which the two main characters (who are only about 14) find themselves covered with leeches, and so they spontaneously take off all their clothes and jump in a river, and then look SURPRISED that they've done so. Like they didn't...

For instance, when the girl Ling and her grandfather are arguing in the back of the tractor at the beginning of the movie, the girl is complaining about this spoiled brat white kid. The grandfather is telling her to be quiet. Then when the cart crashes, the grandfather starts complaining that they've got no respect for old people.

That nice little authentic touch, which was never translated on-screen, added a lot to the movie in my opinion. The only part my friend couldn't understand was when they went to the Tibetan village, because the people there were speaking Tibet dialect, not Mandarin. That just makes it more authentic.

The scenery for the movie is quite beautiful. They must have had to travel far from the cities of China to find such an unpopulated, beautiful place. Shots of the city were authentic also, but it is good that the movie didn't spend much time there.

Usually I like to take a movie and rip it to shreds, nitpicking each and every flaw I can find and criticizing it mercilessly. With this movie, I would rather not do that. Seeing a cute little baby panda happily running and stumbling along is a sight rarely seen, and is so cute that it makes me want to ignore anything that might be wrong with this movie otherwise.

When the mama panda gets trapped in the bear-trap, man that really makes you feel bad. To me it was an even worse feeling than when Bambi's mother died. Fortunately, it all turns out good in the end.

If only the same could be said for pandas in real life. Now I see why it is such a shame that there are so few of them left. Only 1,000 left? I hope the population has grown since this movie was made. It's been 10 years since then.

You know, cuteness rarely does it for me. Too much cute usually makes me gag. But the cuteness in this movie just won me over. Mainly because it is so authentic. A baby panda rolling off of a log and landing on its head just can't be faked, and it is extremely cute to say the least.

You can't watch the baby panda in this movie and feel nothing, unless you are just cold and dead inside.

In conclusion, this is a very good family movie. As another reviewer put it, it's a movie you can watch with your kids and actually not feel bored. Recommmended.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Kids, May 29, 2006
This review is from: The Amazing Panda Adventure (DVD)
I think all the people who reviewed this film have to watch it again from the prospective of a child. Of course the basis of the story isn't plausible, that is the fun of it. This movie is the epitome of a childs' dream adventure. When you are watching it remember that the movie isn't targetted towards adults, it is supposed to be this fantastic adventure where kids get learn things without parents and have an amazing time. So get over yourselves and look at the movie from a different point of view. I love this movie I challenge anyone to disagree with my prospective. Hope you enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars What makes a young persons adventure?, August 27, 2004
This review is from: The Amazing Panda Adventure (DVD)
They must fight their own battles. This means they will probably disobey adults. I'm sure no one has ever seen a teenager disobey an adult. That would not be realistic would it? I'm sure no one has ever seen a teenager put themselves in danger. Anyone that thinks teenagers don't disobey adults and put themselves in danger is living in a world I have not seen. I guess that clarifies what I think of the one reviewers bashing of this movie.

Now as for the movie, if you enjoy movies like "Alaska" or "Fly Away Home" where a family is put in a difficult situation and they are trying to save animals, you will probably enjoy this movie. Great acting, sets, music and scenery make this a wonderful family movie. Any film about saving animals is a plus in my book. Especially if they are in danger of extinction. If you feel there is a real issue with the teenage boy not following orders, what better time to discuss it with your teenagers than while you watch the movie together.

This review is from: The Amazing Panda Adventure (DVD)
I too read the review written by D. Scott. I was appalled by it. What move did this gentelman view???!!!! This was a fabulous story filled with suspense, beauty, love and all that it can conquer. I am a teacher and have shown this movie to students ages 6-15 and their respective social studies teachers. EVERYONE LOVED IT!!! They learned a lot regarding endangered species and the power that dedication and love can hold in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Children's Live Action, July 29, 2008
This review is from: The Amazing Panda Adventure (DVD)
I LOVED this movie as a child! It was probably one of the only live action movies I enjoyed until I was 10 or so... People may be offended by the nudity in this movie, as a child I was not bothered but it is best for parents to decide whether or not a movie is appropriate beforehand anyway. Perhaps the part about this movie that impacted me the most was the other culture shown in it. It opened me up to the world!

This is not so much a review for the movie as much as it is thelling the annoying man with the 2 review to get a life. You realize that you are not a REAL reviewer, correct? Just wanted to make sure because most peoplee write a line or two about if a movie is cute or not. I've seen the movie many times and it's very cute! yes, maybe some parts are cheesey but guess what...it's a movie for CHILDREN! for a 5 - 10 year old child it would be exciting, funny, and education (to learn about pandas and how they are in danger of extincting) Another thing...have you seen any other movies before? how bout all the movies with MASSIVE explosions and the guns and endless violence. and you are going to call THE GREAT PANDA ADVENTURE "twisted" and "disturbing"...get a life! I mean..."oh no the parents are DIVORCED and the father is wrapped up in his work That is SOOO twisted!!!" your review of this movie is comical. and then I go to see what else you've reviewed...a bunch of stupid cartoons and you gave them all 5 stars ha ha get a life mr. D. Scott (and a job while your at it. I know that no one will probably read this but I thought I'd write it because some people bug me to no end. If you have a child they will love this movie. It shows life in (beautiful) china and the work it takes to keep animals in peace. one thing I do agree with D. Scott on is that sometimes you can tell the pandas are not real in a certain shot but I don't think your child will notice or even care.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Amazing Panda Adventure, March 16, 2003

It's a plausible scenario. quite a touching story. PANDAS looked quite real. The movie's got beautiful scenery and music, true to that part of the world. It shows the dedication of a true scientist, though didn't mention that there are more perils in the animal's natual habitat. It stands out to be a great movie. Pandas, indeed are very rear & precious species of the world! I don't remember if it's mentioned that PANDAS are high on the endangered species list. They need human intenvention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie, January 30, 2010

This movie is very educational and wonderful. I think it depicts the issues Panda's face today being on the list of extinction. We need to help these creatures flourish in the wild and in captivity, and stop the endless killing of these beautiful animals.

This filmed in China has it all!! The locations are magnificent, the acting is good, and the plot is very well developed. Let's face it, how can you go wrong with such a cute lead character. If you do not find pandas to be almost the cutest animal there is, you will probably not be charmed by this film. I was struck with how good the boy is that plays the lead. It is not easy to work with animals they always steal the scene, but he did an outstanding job of holding up his character. The two Chinese actors were excellent. This one is for the whole family. The plight of the panda is well developed here, without being overdone
