Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3-- Three dramatic stories of rescues--tales that could bring chills to readers. Unfortunately, their impact is lessened by the informal fictionalized presentation of the facts and the use of first names. The only indication that the stories are true is the dateline at the beginning of each of the three episodes. The first rescue involves a skydiver who is knocked unconscious and unable to open her parachute. In the second episode, a boy manages to grab a young girl away from the jaws of an alligator. The last event recounts the amazing rescue of a toddler who fell into a deep well. As beginning-reader fare, the book does fill the bill for readability at the late primary level. However, the present-tense narratives and the lack of specific facts make it less successful as nonfiction. The illustrations are realistic and aid comprehension. Especially well done are the diagrams depicting the child's entrapment in the well and the efforts taken to reach her. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA

More About the Author

George Shea is a children's writer and environmental journalist. His most
recent non-fiction book is a biography of Rachel Carson: "Rachel Carson, Founder of the Environmental Movement." He is currently writing a biography of global warming pioneer, Charles David Keeling (1928-2005) of Keeling Curve fame and sees a strong parallels between Keeling and Carson. "Rachel Carson woke the world up to the fact that the environment was vulnerable and could be damaged, even destroyed by human activity. Less than a decade later, Keeling accomplished the same thing relative to global warming with his measurements that showed the relentless growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere."

He also enjoys writing about inventors. His "First Flight, the Story of Tom Tate and the Wright Brothers, tells the true story of young Tom Tate, a Kitty Hawk boy who befriended Wilbur and Orville and became a 12 year old test pilot when the Wrights sent him up in their first experimental glider.

He lives in Studio City, California with his wife, Martha Stevens, a writer and professional storyteller. In 2009, George and Martha's play, "Seeds," a retelling of the myth of Persephone was read at Fordham Lincoln Center.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing True Stories, March 27, 2009
My 5 yr old son borrowed this book from our library's easy reader section. This book has three captivating true stories of rescue that inspire and uplift. We have enjoyed reading them as a family. My 5 yr old who picked it is reading it aloud to us. His 6 yr old brother is also reading it aloud to us. We like borrowing books from the library, yet this is one I would definitely buy and add to our family home library. I can see our kids (5 - ages 8 yrs old to 1 yr old) read this book over and over again.

Contains a skydiving rescue story (Arizona, 1987), an alligator rescue story (Florida, 1951), and a toddler in a well in Texas story (Jessica McClure, Midland, TX, 1987).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, July 5, 2011
I have done a lot of subbing in the school system and have consistently found that kids love these three stories! I have read it to kids as young as kindergarten and kids as old as Grade 6 with the same kind of interest. They especially like it that the stories are true and we have since followed up by looking up the video of Jessica McClure's rescue on the internet and talking about where she is now. I am often asked to read and re-read these stories in classes where I have been before.

As a result of reading this book out loud, many kids have written down the name of the Step Into Reading series and looked up other books in it. I have the story about King Tut's tomb being discovered as well as the story of Pompeii and found them very popular as well.
