Book Description

5 and upK and up
From tundras to tropical seas, Amazing Things Animals Do spans the globe to provide a captivating window into the animal world. Four beautifully illustrated chapters explore the ways animals help each other, the surprising lives of animal babies, animal habits such as hiding food, and the wonders of animal communication. Lavish watercolor scenes bring each special relationship to life: a tiny finch perches atop a giant Galápagos tortoise, fireflies flash codes to find food and mates, a polar bear mother and her cubs splash the icy Arctic waters. Marilyn Baillie’s concise, lyrical text captures the gentle balance of life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A wonderful book for young children…Water color artwork bring the information to life… (BC Parent )

Useful and informative, this would be a welcome addition to your library shelf. (Brandon Sun )

The tone is comforting...Much accurate factual information is relayed in this gentle manner. A photo and full-page illustrations by Romi Caron accompanies each narrative. Like the text, the paintings are realistic, yet softened, and full of personality. (Canadian Children’s Book News )

…a good read-aloud for early grades… (CM Magazine: Canadian Review of Materials )

5.0 out of 5 stars Great subject matter and format, September 12, 2007
By
M.E.G.R. (Southern California) - See all my reviews
A collection of short "stories" (about half page of text, the rest of each two-page spread is illustration) about various animals. They are divided into chapter categories: animals who help each other, animals babies, animals who hide and save their food, how animals talk to each other. We got this when my daughter was 3.5 and she was able to sit still for a few pages at a time and enjoy it. Now that she is 5 I consider it part of our science homeschool curriculum. Very good illustrations, and interesting subject matter for both kids and adults. Each animal description stands alone but it's a pretty thick book, so you can choose a short or long reading session.
I gave it 5 stars because it is difficult to find good "readaloud" material for younger kids that has enough words per page to encourage listening skills and imagination, but yet the content is appropriate and interesting for them.
