“Michael Guillen has always had a unique ability to make fascinating science topics understandable and relevant to people’s lives. Amazing Truths is proof of that.” (―Joan Lunden)
“As a gifted communicator, Michael Guillen makes science easy to understand. He has done it again with his latest explanations of how the Bible and science complement each other. In a profound and beautiful way he helps us realize that science does not contradict the Bible but in fact supports it. A summer ‘must read’ for all high school grads going to college.” (―Dr. Robert A. Schuller)
“Michael Guillen bridges the seeming gap between science and faith better than anyone I know.” (―Cal Thomas, Syndicated and USA Today columnist/Fox News contributor)
“An entire generation is being swept up in a false narrative that the Bible and science are incompatible. Too many today, both young and old, believe that faith in the Bible has been discredited by the new religion of science. In Amazing Truths, Dr. Michael Guillen dismantles those myths, presenting hard evidence and sound reason to cause skeptics to reevaluate their own belief system and believers to have renewed confidence in the Bible.” (―Curtis V. Hail, President & CEO, e3 Partners / I Am Second)
“Here is a truly unusual autobiography: an amazing blend of up-to-date science and the world in which we exist as conscious spiritual beings.” (―Owen Gingerich, Harvard University professor emeritus and author of God’s Planet)
“Must science and faith be at war? No, says physicist Michael Guillen in this delightfully readable yet thoroughly researched book. Whether you are a believer or a doubter, you’ll be astonished by Amazing Truths.” (―Hattie Kauffman, Former correspondent of ABC and CBS News and author of Falling Into Place)
“The title of this book says it all: Michael Guillen illustrates how science and the Bible are partners in revealing amazing truths about life---and life eternal.” (―Spencer Christian, Weather forecaster/interviewer/host for KGO-TV―formerly at Good Morning America)
“For many people today, even self-described Christians, science has replaced the Bible as the ultimate authority in their lives. In Amazing Truths, Michael Guillen explains brilliantly why that secular view is unfounded and offers one that is better informed intellectually and spiritually.” (―Rev. Dr. Greg Hughes, Senior Pastor, Malibu Presbyterian Church)
“Michael is one of the most original thinkers I’ve ever known. He lives where the creative meets the intellect. I can think of no one more qualified to write this book!” (―Dave Alan Johnson, Writer/producer/ director (Doc, Sue Thomas FBEye, October Baby, Mom’s Night Out, Coffee Shop, Woodlawn))

I do wish to clarify and correct several of his statements, however, to wit:
1. Mr. Fanelii repeatedly states that I am attempting to prove God’s existence, or that I am relying on intuition and faith to prove God’s existence, or that science has utterly failed me in my attempt to prove God’s existence. Amazing Truths is not about “proving” God’s existence. As I explain in the book, no one and nothing can prove or disprove the existence of God, not even science. I wrote Amazing Truths to demonstrate that science and the Bible are not at odds when it comes to ten fundamental truths. I leave readers to draw their own conclusions about this remarkable harmony. For me, at the very least, it is evidence that the God described within the Bible has not been discredited by anything that modern science has discovered, or is ever likely to discover. That’s not “proof” of God’s existence, of course, but it is also no small thing.
2. Amazing Truths touts the importance not just of intuition and faith, but of logic and reasoning as well. Indeed, the thesis of Amazing Truths is that the two pairs of abilities, while quite different, are wonderfully complementary. I devote an entire chapter to explaining why logic and reasoning alone cannot even prove all the theorems/truths of arithmetic, let alone successfully address the big questions of life. For that reason, even the scientific method – which relies on logic, reasoning, and evidence, as far as they go – inevitably finds itself needing to rely on intuition and faith to remain useful and viable.Read more ›
By: Michael Guillen
This may not be the fairest way to review Dr. Guillen’s book Amazing Truths but considering the title it may be the best way to evaluate its ideas. Dr. Guillen’s premise is that science doesn’t disprove the existence of God as much as it enhances and explains his existence. Intriguing thought and one that could assist many in overcoming doubts and fears. But does it hold up?
A friend gave me a fairly recent book by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow called The Grand Designbecause he knows I struggle with the concepts put forth by science coupled with the faith needed for religious belief. I am neither scientist nor religious scholar and I have a lot of doubts about each. Many scientific theories seem almost as amazing and difficult to believe as the existence of a supreme being that oversees all and may have sent science as a tool to explain our existence.
My friend’s take is very agnostic at best and probably more atheistic while my belief in a higher power comes with a lot of doubt when considering the vastness of the universe and various theories that science seems to validate that cause me to question my belief. It is a philosophical struggle that I thought Dr. Guillen's book might help to ease or at least provide other evidence. And it does to a point.
In 10 brief chapters, Dr. Guillen takes many aspects of science and describes them in some detail. His description is sometimes as difficult to comprehend as those in The Grand Design which attempts to provide scientific theory describing the birth, existence and growth of the universe in terms we can all understand.Read more ›
I enjoy books on the subject of the Christian faith.
I enjoy books on the subject of science.
I love books that marry the two (Hugh Ross and “Reasons to Believe” ministries).
So as I was reading this I couldn’t put my finger on why I wasn’t really enjoying this book. I liked the general format of each chapter:
Starts with a general subject intro, continues into science’s understanding of the subject, then ends with a spiritual perspective and appreciation of the science and God.
While I found the science sections to be a bit brief and macro view… that wasn’t my hang up (totally glossed over the creepy-ness of the “double slit” experiment!). It finally occurred to me today – I think this was written to maybe an 8th though 12th grade reader! While the science reviews were a bit “30 thousand feet”, I really didn’t care for the overly familiar and at times self aggrandizing tone ("when I was a TV anchor talking to astronauts from Antarctica"…). If I were a dreamy 15 year old in honors science classes – no problem, but as a reader in their 30s with a BS degree it was a bit… distracting?
Oh yeah, while the subject wasn’t explicitly discussed, the author seems to be an “Old Earth” creationist. He refers to modern humans being around for 50,000 years and refers to the “big bang” theory… all without back-pedaling – which is great! The author doesn’t push the topic at all – just sort of cites main stream science’s position. While this perspective of cosmology and geology align with my personal take on the whole “creation debate”, it’s unfortunate that it may be a hang up for some reading / buying this book.
Obviously the average 8th grader isn’t captivated by quantum mechanics and gravitational theory, but if you know one who is, I’d recommend this book.
