Fans of Richard Lederer and his witty wordplay will be pleased to see that he's back, and his newest book, Amazing Words: An Alphabetical Anthology of Alluring, Astonishing, Beguiling, Bewitching, Enchanting, Enthralling, Mesmerizing, Miraculous, Tantalizing, Tempting, and Transfixing Words, is sure to be a delight for all who have spent countless hours reading his previous works. With this one, the author has once again outdone himself.

Opening the covers, it might be tempting to just start looking up Dr. Lederer's take on certain words, but the reader will quickly find that reading it from the beginning will be too compelling. For this reader and admitted fan of his often-punny books (and yes, there are some of them here as well), it was far more pleasurable to start from the beginning and just go through the 224 pages as a reading adventure.

Richard Lederer is one of those who truly has a deep affection for the power of the spoken and written word, and it shows even after writing over thirty-five books focused primarily on the English language. With this new offering, it's clear that he has not grown weary of words and writing about them. He states that much in the opening of his introduction, where he declares himself to be one of the luckiest men on the face of the earth, and that what he does has never felt like work.

In this book, the author takes us on a journey, beginning with the letter 'a' to the word zyzzyva, which is the last word in many dictionaries. There are many stops along the way, and many of these offer additional words that will have the reader scrambling for the index to make a side trip of further discovery.

Enjoyable for word lovers. Some entries are about word origins but much of them are about curiosities in their spellings.

One of those books you can pick up and read a section and say I did not know that. Wonderful for anyone that loves words and their derivations.
