2.0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE - YOUR FILES ARE NOT SAFE IN THE CLOUD November 24, 2013
By v19Lobo

When I first signed up for Amazon Cloud, I found the perfect one-stop solution for storage and back-up in a very user friendly package. Back in the good old days, I installed the Amazon Cloud Drive desktop app and dropped the files I wanted to store into it. The files got uploaded to the cloud and there they stayed, accessible and downloadable from any one of my computers. Once I uploaded a file to the cloud, I could delete it from my local hard drive and the file would live eternally in the cloud. Who could ask for anything more - a perfect back-up solution and a way to free up space on my local hard drive for more important stuff. Combined with the Amazon Cloud Player for my music, I had everything in one place that I could access whenever and wherever without worrying about data loss.

Then one day, without any notice, Amazon decided to "improve" their cloud drive. On that fateful day, I turned on my machine and, without asking me (and they won't ask you either if you sign up for this "Improved" product), Amazon created an Amazon Cloud Folder (the "Cloud Folder") on my C drive - not my external drive where I keep all my big data files, like photos and music. And then, again without asking me (and again they won't ask you either), Amazon downloaded all of my files in the cloud into the Cloud Folder and deleted the old desktop app. The "new and improved" Amazon Cloud Drive actually consumed local storage space for me, because now I had a copy of my files on my C drive (where I never had or wanted them) and on my external drive (where I always stored them). And there is no Amazon-supported option to change the location of the Cloud Folder - it goes on your C drive whether you like it or not.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible - Locked into using the C drive for all files November 8, 2013
Platform for Display:PC
This "Desktop" version of the cloud is useful, as long as you are using very little storage or have an ENORMOUS C:\ drive. If you only use it for the free 5GB it is great, even 50 or 100 might be ok, but if you are a paying customer and you want some real size like 200GB you have to maintain that size on your C:\ drive, which is a lot when you're trying to utilize your new (smaller and faster) solid state drives. If someone at Amazon doesn't figure out really quick how to move the folder location within your own PC I'm going to switch to Google because at least you can select which drive or folder you want to back up. Also, how about just being able to MOVE it onto the Amazon cloud rather than keeping a copy on my computer? Maybe I just want to back it up and don't need a local copy, NO CHOICE, must be a complete copy from PC to Amazon cloud, if you delete something it deletes it from the cloud so it isn't like a real remote storage but a copy of what you have on your computer. WHICH WOULD BE FINE IF I COULD CHOOSE MY D:\ Drive as the location.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you use this service, keep your own hardcopy backup November 25, 2013
Platform for Display:PC
I've been using Amazon Cloud Drive for a while and thought it was great. I've recommended it to quite a few people. However, I just discovered that all the thousands of photos I had saved to Amazon Cloud Drive are gone. They were in the new Cloud Drive Folder when I had a computer that crashed. I started using a new computer and redownloaded Amazon Cloud Drive to it, but I guess my photos didn't make it. I thought what I read about the new cloud drive folder said that if something happened to your computer, your files would still be safe online. Guess not. Thankfully I had hardcopy backups for my online storage backup.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Cloud Drive for PC is crap! March 26, 2014
Platform for Display:PC|Verified Purchase
I just tried to read one of my books on my Amazon Kindle for PC, however, it appears that my Amazon Kindle is out of date and has been replaced with something called "Amazon Cloud Drive for PC"? When I tried to download and run this App on my PC, all I got is "GTWY_810 Gateway Error" whatever that is? I re-downloaded this App several time, but no luck. It appears that I've not only lost my Kindle, but all of my downloaded books as well. All just because someone thought that they would come with a cutesy little App. Online support turned out to be just a round robin and there is no one I can call directly. Amazon, thanks for nothing!

Signed,

Discussed Customer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as useful as it could be January 7, 2014

I agree with some of the earlier reviewers that it's a shame that you have to have a complete copy of all your cloud files on your computer. This means I cannot even use the cloud drive on a new tablet I bought because it doesn't have enough space. Maybe Amazon should figure out a way to allow you to only mirror selected folders on a per device basis. So, my desktop PC could have a full mirror, but my tablet could do a partial mirror of only the folders I want to access from that device.

Anywhere, anytime, my "sanity" tunes are with me. Some weeks every day is Monday. For those who work 5:00 to 9:00 it helps to keep you centered and focused.
