Great intro to Sub Pop's current catalog,
By jbitzenh (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amazon Sampler (MP3 Download)
Historically, Sub Pop has been an important player in determining the direction of musical tastes in America (on the merits of introducing grunge bands like Nirvana). On that alone, I think this (currently free) sampler is worth a download. Past that, this is a good introduction to Sub Pop's active catalog, which includes many bands that are often in the experimental folk rock vein. My favorite artists include Fleet Foxes and Iron & Wine but I enjoyed listening to all the tracks.
If you like this sampler, other current Sub Pop bands worth looking into include the Postal Service, the Shins, Low, Lonely Dear, Wolf Parade, the Helio Sequence, Blitzen Trapper, and Band of Horses.

Really great, something for everyone,

I am trying to take full advantage of the free music downloads to discover new music, and having sampled, most of the samplers, this is by far the best. Try it. You'll like at least 80% of it, if you have an ear for diversity.

flight of the conchords,

I keep listening to the flight of the conchords track and keep cracking up. It's hilarious. The rest of the tracks are half decent, and worth checking out. Doesn't hurt that they're all free.

Good stuff! Can't beat the price,

Sure many of the artists "sound like [someone else]" but it's a good solid mix of groovy tunes for FREE. "Furr" is excellent.

I downloaded several of the free samplers on Amazon today. The song by Flight of the Conchords (Hurt Feelings) made me laugh. It was worth the time of downloading.

Best sampler Amazon has ever offered,

Have downloaded too many of the samplers from Amazon only to find an occasional interesting song. This Sub Pop sampler had some great bands I already knew (Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, Iron and Wine) and some good music from others I didn't. Most of this stuff will find a place on my ipod. Just have to figure out what to delete...

Deserving to be a best-selling CD,
By roger c "chem" (santa ana, california) - See all my reviews

This CD deserves to be a best-seller. Most of the songs are excellent. "FURR" by Blitzen Trapper is amazing, the vocalist is extra-ordinary. I never heard this singer before. His voice is so captivating that I have to research who this singer is. Try downloading "FURR" and listen to it - you'll really thank Amazon for it.

mellow 'indie folk rock',

Though SubPop is best known for Nirvana and grunge, this sampler has nothing resembling either. For the most part, the songs here are mellow indie college folk rock songs. There are a few exceptions: The Obits' song is probably the most 'grungy' song on here (though its more punk), while the Handsome Furs sounds like 80s new wave. And the Vaselines have a nice catchy pop tune. The only song I didn't like was the 'comic rap' song by Flight of the Conchords.
At the moment, the sampler does not appear to be available. As a free sampler, it was definitely worth getting, and ever for a few bucks it would be a good deal.

Free Flight of the Conchords!,
By

Any album with tracks (or even one track) from Bret and Jermaine is worthy of a least 3 stars.
Hurt Feelings is another brilliant rap/folk/anti-folk/parody/comedy track, in a similar, if not mellower, vein as "Hip-Hopopotamus vs. The Rhymenoceros" or "Mutha'uckas". The track appears "The Tough Brets," the third episode of the second season of the HBO comedy series "Flight of the Conchords." It is scheduled to appear on their forthcoming 2009 studio album, currently titled "I Told You I Was Freaky." The HBO series episode also includes a reprise of this track, which is not currently scheduled for release. The other tracks on this collection? Ummmm... Hmmmmm. Well, check out the previews and see if they are for you. They are certainly not for me. "The day after my birthday is not my birthday, mum."

Straight from the original Woodstock...!,
By
This review is from: Amazon Sampler (MP3 Download)
I have to agree completely with the other review that says these are "hippie" songs. With the exception of perhaps two or three, all of them are a perfect compliment to the "Woodstock" soundtrack. Listening to some of these songs made me immediately think of The Byrds, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and other notables from the era.
Not exactly my cup of tea, but if that's your kind of music, you'll really enjoy this sampler. |
