Important note regarding permissions. The Amazon App requires access to the following services to operate properly:

Send SMS: This permission is used to simplify phone number verification during setup of Mobile Carrier Billing for Apps and Games. Mobile Carrier Billing is currently only available for customers in Germany that have an O2 SIM Card.
Read Contacts: This permission is used to so that you can access your phone contacts from the Amazon app for the purposes of sending Amazon gift cards.
Receive SMS and Uninstall Shortcuts: These permissions will be used to simplify the process of phone number verification for several exciting upcoming Amazon app features.
Location: due to the fact that this is now a world wide app, location permissions are required to support a delivery service feature offered by Amazon in France and Japan. Only in those stores is the location data required or used. In those locations you are able to request delivery to a convenience store closest to your current location. That service is not available in other Amazon countries.

Phone calls: within the app you are able to place a call to Amazon Customer Service. Tap Menu -> More -> Help -> Call Customer Service, and we will place the proper number in the phone app and dial it.

Take pictures: bar code scanning and image search require access to the camera function if you choose to start the bar code scanner from the app.

Account Permissions: This permission is used by the Amazon app suite on the HTC Droid DNA.

1.0 out of 5 stars intrusive beyond acceptable levels May 21, 2015
I refuse to allow the latest update to take place. There's absolutely no legitimate reason your app needs to know who's on my contacts list or how frequently I contact those people. This is outrageous! What possible justification would there be for this level of intrusion into my private life? Uninstalling the previous version of the app. Not worth divulging this level of private information.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way too active in the background July 31, 2011
I've shopping on Amazon for over 10+ years, it offers awesome prices and services. This review is regarding to Amazon's Android Appstore app, which you need it to run Amazon Mobile. You may not know is that some of Amazon's daily free paid apps are also require Appstore app. If Appstore is uninstalled, you will be bombarded with warning message about how the apps can't run without Appstore every time the apps try to run in the background. It becomes nightmare when these apps try to run every hour, you'll end up getting these message every hour.

The reason that I uninstall Appstore is because it's constantly running in the background doing something. Not only it's a privacy concern, it also slows down the phone and drains its battery.

To Amazon App department, please follow Amazon Retail business model; which is offer excellent services and prices with no string attached. If you offer 3rd party paid apps for free, offer them as they are. Don't link them to Appstore app for data collecting purpose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Cell Phone App July 17, 2014
By Joey
I had this app on my cell phone for several years and spent thousands of dollars here. In the heart of summer of 2014 my phone requested I update the Amazon app,so I did and when the traditional second page appeared and asked for permission to view all my media and photos I decline, lowered my five star to one star rating and said they did not need such access. Amazon sucked the app and any sign of it off my phone. I can't even find the review. So much for those impulse purchases. I had hoped to keep the old app/

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm removing the app because it is too nosy. May 19, 2015
I'm joining the list of users who are frequent users of Amazon, but I'm removing the app from my phone. It's just asking for way too many permissions. My contacts? My photos? SMS messages? My location? I'm buying stuff from you, Amazon, not sharing my most intimate details.

1.0 out of 5 stars Permissions hell March 15, 2015
By Shooter
Why do you need access to my flash light and microphone? How about you start making calls from my phone too. Not interested, will just use the Amazon website.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wanted to like September 24, 2014
Verified Purchase
Why require that one app take control of everything without giving the user any control? I have prime, have used it from my phone and wanted only to add the way to long overdue Instant Video feature. What I got was an Overlord that controlled all app downloads, shopping, and instant video buried inside. It made the entire handset lag, froze the home screen, that has never happened with any app before or since I have uninstalled it. This app is a data hog permissions nightmare that screams since you didn't by the Fire phone, here is Amazons way of peeking into your life and hacking it. Really Amazon, I do love your shipping but, Netflix had this right along time ago. Uninstalled!

Let me start by saying, I freaking love Amazon. I've been a prime member since 2012 and literally buy something a few times a week (check my order history amazon), but I HATE the mew update. Where the heck did my filtering and sort options go? I can't even filter results to prime products only. This sucks. Give me my old version back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon makes it so easy to spend money June 1, 2013

That's right, ol' Jeff knows the meaning of customer service, and ease of shopping, so anywhere on earth that you have a data connection, be it, work, home, beach, cruise, or Tuscany - you are only a click, swipe, or touch away from buying that "need it" item. Amazon does not disappoint.

Yes, I'd also like to know why there is no Amazon Deals app for Android. And I haven't been able to find the Gold Box on this app, so it's really bad. I have to rely on my text messages sent through Twitter when a new GB deal starts.
