It's the flooding in Thailand. You'd be better off waiting a month or two until production is in full swing. Simple supply and demand issue. Not a good time to buy a D7000 and a replacement model is in the works - that will make you even feel worse about buying it at a hiked up price.
Ten new D7000's with the 18-105 kit lens were listed for sale by Amazon today - price $1,499 - back to under MSRP. They did sell out quickly - it appeared from the selling pattern that one individual or entity purchase several at once. I didn't purchase one today, because I don't need this lens. Nikon D7000's are in production and as pointed out above, should reach normal levels by the end of March. But, some are hitting merchants now. I believe that the wait is almost over.
