Shredding a CD/DVD or a credit card is no problem.
    Duffer.
I cannot give this product 5-stars however as I do not believe it can handle 12 sheets of paper as advertised.

Fortunately Amazons return policy is rational so this is going back.

    01-Jun-2013 Update:
    -------------------
Over a year later, and this thing is still kicking butt. It hasn't overheated once! Still super-satisfied with this purchase.

    14-Oct-2012 Update:
    -------------------
Shredder still going strong! I just shredded a few months backlog of stuff all in one sitting with the motor just about running constant for maybe 20 min straight. I only had to unload the hopper 2x- it is deceivingly large in capacity. I was just waiting for the motor to kick out due to overheating, since I've been conditioned for so many years by my former shredder, but it just didn't happen. On the old shredder, this volume would have taken 1 hr to shred due to motor overheating and auto shutdown. Still happy as a clam with this purchase!

    17-April-2012 Original Review:

Wow! After reading tons of reviews on Amazon, I was either going to go with a Fellows or this AmazonBasics. I decided to try this one because:
    1. The competitive price for a mid-class 12-sheet vs. 11 sheet shredder. I figured more sheets=more powerful motor.
    2. The highest rated Fellows in this mid-class category was rated so-so for CD's, vs. this one which reviewers rated well in this area.
    3. I figured since this one had Amazon's name on it, I'd have a better chance of getting a higher-class machine than another brand selling on Amazon for a similar price.

All 3 points above amount to one thing: Hardcore motor for hardcore shredding. I was tired of fooling around with small shredders where I'd wait for motor cooling longer than shredding (not to mention multiple, messy basket emptying-s).

When I received the package today, I was initially disappointed wrt the size of the box.

Our old shredder was just a ribbon shredder, and a pitiful 5 sheets at a time (albeit 5 sheets would get stuck, the motor would overheat, etc). We had been delaying cleaning our filing cabinets because of our pitiful little beast. We shredded 3 garbage bags of stuff the first weekend, and this shredder is still going strong. The cuttings are small and the basket holds a LOT of shredding. We are very happy with this shredder, as the blades are STILL sharp after all the abuse we put it through in the first few days. The blades are more of a die cut than traditional blades, and they make short work of any job. The shredder is less noisy than our old one, and credit cards and CDs really get destroyed well. Competing web retailers were nearly twice the price for a comparable product.

    Thank you amazon!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I am a shred master-- I shred basically anything with my name or address on it/in it. I am especially angry towards credit card offers and love to shred those with fury. I really get a good sense of empowerment by shredding a whole credit card offer without ever opening it.

This shredder, while advertised as a 12 sheet, can't handle credit card offers very well compared to my other current shredder, the Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201) which is only rated for 11 pages.

This shredder is a more well rounded shredder compared to the Fellowes. This one has a dedicated CD shredding slot, credit card indention, and some additional "feel good" safety features. The paper chute is easier to hit when you approach it under a desk or at an angle. It has a window in the shred bin so you can see how full the bin is. It's a little louder and slower than the Fellowes.

That all being said, if you're looking for pure brute shredding capability, the Fellowes is that, with less frills, bells or whistles but it has the extra "grunt" to get through tough junk mail. The Fellowes is a little difficult to get the angle right if you are reaching for it under a desk, but all the features considered, I'd personally choose the Fellowes.

If you're just shredding a few sheets of office paper at a time, I'd choose this one as it's a better well rounded model.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've been using a Fellowes ten sheet shredder purchased at a warehouse store for a few years. It cost around $90, is very loud, stalls out when attempting to handle credit cards (something its manual claims is one of its functions) and balks when I try to shred more than five pieces of paper at a time. The difference between the Fellows ten sheet and the much quieter Amazon Basics twelve sheet shredder is significant.

After a few days of extensive use, the Basics unit has not jammed once, although it slows down when more than ten sheets are inserted at one time - but it still does the job. To avoid any slow down during shredding, about seven sheets maximum should be inserted at one time.

The credit card and CD shredders each have their own separate slot from the paper area and both handle the items as if they were butter. The function operates smoothly and efficiently. In comparison, my Fellowes shredder is larger, louder, handles less paper at one time and struggles to shred credit cards and CDS. The Amazon unit is infinitely better and seems quite solid.

The instructions recommend using shredder oil once a month, although a plain vegetable oil may also be used. It may be tempting to skip this step, but this is something I've been doing for years with my shredders and I believe has prolonged the life of the equipment.

And, I learned something new - the user manual stated that window envelopes, newspaper and padded envelopes should not be shredded. I expect many years of use from this shredder and will update my review if I encounter any problems.
