AmazonBasics 70" pistol grip tripod, is rugged, and heavy duty, but is somewhat lacking in some of the finer points.

Interested in a solidly built tripod with a pistol grip, I had the Ravelli APGL4 Professional Tripod on my watchlist for some time. I had no idea that AmazonBasics even produced tripods, but when I unexpectedly discovered the AmazonBasics 70" adjustable pistol grip tripod, I found that it was pretty much a carbon copy of the Ravelli APGL4. It was available as a Gold Box Deal for $65.99, and I managed to get one, before they sold out in a few minutes.

One of the first things you notice, is obviously the weight, as this rig weighs in at about 10 pounds. It comes with a decent quality carrying case, but it still will be quite a load to carry around. Apparently manufactured in China, the primary material used are metals, with very few plastic or rubber parts. Straight out the box, most of the movable parts were a little stiff, and in need of lubrication, so I applied some silicone spray, and moly lube, which definitely helped.

Once the tripod was adequately lubricated, it became much easier to use, although it still feels a little "clunky" at times, as some of the fittings are not the smoothest to operate. A prime example is the "quick release" plate, which has a tiny hard to handle fitting on the set screw, that makes attaching it to the camera a much harder task than it should be. The locking system on the handle appears to be very secure however, and also includes a second screw operated locking clamp. A spare quick release plate is also included.

I am thrilled with this tripod. I'm 6'5" tall and am used to extending the center column of tripods to their max height. Which gives you a very wobbly camera mount.

The 70 inch version of this tripod lets me take pictures with the center tube almost all the way down which creates a MUCH more steady camera.

It's very sturdy, it comes with an extra quick mount so you can have a mount on 2 cameras for quick swap outs. It comes with a nice, padded carrying case. The tripod fits in the case with the head attached which is a very nice surprise.

I have a very heavy DSLR and lens and I have no fears about using this tripod to hold them.

The pistol grip head is absolutely brilliant in how it makes moving the camera around so easy.

I can't vouch for video because I don't usually do any video work. But for a DSLR, and a heavy one at that, I think it's a fantastic bargain and a very solid tripod.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The first thing I noticed when I unpackaged this tripod was the weight. My first thought was "Yay, solid construction!" and my second "Darn, its heavy!". Further investigation proved both points. This tripod is very sturdy and could probably handle any photographing conditions you are ever likely to use it in. The heavy part makes its mobility a little less convenient, but then hey, a little extra weight lifting probably wont hurt you. And fortunately, there is more to this tripod than weight.

Pros:
-It is very stable.
-The pistol grip on it is soooo nice. It makes the whole heavy thing a little less important. A pistol grip allows you to pull a handle to swing the camera around on a ball joint to change the angle quickly.
-The feet are on joints to handle different terrains.
-The quick release on the legs is handy and well designed.
-It has levels on the head and grip.
-Comes with a carrying case

Cons:
-Its heavy.
-The same thing that makes the feet nice also makes them kind of hard to set properly.
-The key to attach the camera is too small (fine for my feminine hands, not so great for my friend's dad, who is a normal sized guy).
-It is difficult to move the legs to a wide stance.

I asked my friend's dad what he thought this tripod would cost. He has had 15 years practice of advanced amateur photography (this means he has a really nice camera, several tripods, and probably knows what he is talking about). He first said $150-$180. When I told him it was $80, he revised it to $125-$150. So it seems to be a great deal for what you get. He tried it out a little and really liked it.

I think the pros are much more solid than the cons. It seems like at this price for this ability and construction, this is an awesome tripod. I really like it!

I own and use several tripods. From the Slik U212 that I bought in 1981 to my Bogen/Manfrottto. I was looking at reviews and saw one for the Amazonbasics 70 inch tripod. When I looked at the price I was sure it was a mistake. Tripods in this price range usually are short, flimsy and poorly made. You can't even get a quality ball head for what you pay for this complete unit.

With the legs fully extended and the center column fully lowered my camera eyepiece is right at my eye level. Fully raised and it's over my head. The tripod is as solid as a rock and quite beefy. If you're looking for light weight, then look elsewhere, but if you want a solid well made camera support this is the most economical tripod I've ever come across.
