And therein lies the rub.
I'm using this cable as a second power cord for my Samsung Note 3 phone. I bought it for use in my car, so I opted for the 3-foot length.
The problem: At the 3-foot length, the heavier gauge wire makes this cable much less flexible than might be demanded in some tighter in-car uses. This puts more stress on the phone connection and on the USB connection in the car, which might damage both in the long run.
I don't normally advocate for more flexible cabling and have always preferred a heavier gauge for its robustness, but in a short cable, it may be a disadvantage to be so rigid.
One of those things no one considers until after the purchase.
Excellent cable for the money, but this one caveat may apply in your case and is worth considering.
The cable is quite thick though, so you can't really bent it too much.
The ends are gold plated, both ends of cable.
This does markedly improve performance of file transfers between usb 3 external drives and usb 3 ports or expansion cards.
This is a really solid cable and is well worth the price.
The only thing I noticed is it is a little hard to twist the ends into place if you happen to pick the cord upside down and have to reposition to insert into the port. That is only reason I did not give this 5 stars.
It's a really solid and nice performing cable. Buy it.
Word of caution - this is USB 3.0 compliant. While the connectors for the A plug are on 3.0 can plug into 2.0 sockets, the Micro B connector is not compatible with USB 2.0 devices...it is a completely different shape and has more pins. So if you're looking at this cable to plug any device into your computer or the like, make sure this is what you want. It also won't work as a replacement cable for your USB phone charger that takes micro B (unless your phone specifically has the 3.0 connector, which mine does not, and I don't know of any that do)
Edited to add....since it seems a pint of contention in the comments: yes, more and more newer phones take micro B 3.0 so this will work for them if they do. My phone at the time of the review was a Samsung Galaxy s4, which has a 2.0 connector. I was unfamiliar with the s5 which I do now own that does have 3.0, and yes, more and more do. Still, good idea to check before buying.

The hard plastic casing around the micro-usb end is very thick. It is too thick to use with a Samsung Galaxy in a Lifeproof case.Published 1 day ago by Timothy Benoit
