DVD quality is terrible and the movie itself is not much better,
This review is from: The Ambassador's Daughter (DVD)
THE DVD...
I've viewed bad public domain DVDs before but this was something to scream at. There are scenes when someone is talking and half of their face is in the frame and the other half is cut off. There are hisses, pops, and other unpleasant soundtrack flaws throughout (at times it even blurs dialogue). The screen jumps constantly and is full of haze. Until a good quality print of this is issued, this particular DVD should be avoided. Then again, you may want to avoid the movie altogether... THE MOVIE... Sadly, the movie itself is scarcely better than the DVD on which it is presented. Despite a knockout cast (what drew me to this was the fact that Myrna Loy and Olivia de Havilland are both in it), the film never comes together and is missing the vital spark needed for a romantic comedy. Despite being about 40 at the time the film was made, de Havilland looks very youthful and is effortlessly believable as the youthful title character. But even she can't save this highly disappointing film. Pity!

The Ambassador's Daughter,
By Tom Without Pity (A Major Midwestern Metropolis) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ambassador's Daughter (DVD)
This is a review for THE AMBASSADOR'S DAUGHTER (1956)directed and written by Norman Krasna. Olivia de Haviland in a 1956 romcom ? Well, why not? She was good in practically everything I've seen her in and if you've ever watched her carry the Sonny Tufts burdened wartime bomb, GOVERNMENT GIRL, you can believe that she'd do justice to herself and her character in this trifle. The story concerns Joan Fisk, daughter of the American ambassador to France, who is bored showing Americans the well-known French sights and wants to prove to her father that no all GIs are wolves. She accepts a date with Sgt. Danny Sullivan, played by John Forsythe, and immediately falls for him. The rest of this movie concerns rather silly attempts to conceal the relationship from her father and possibly everyone else. With John Forsythe, Tommy Noonan, MYrna Loy, Adolph Menjou, Edward Arnold. By the way, the picure quality on the copy that I saw was certainly okay, pretty fair, in fact. I give THE AMBASSADOR'S DAUGHTER Three Stars.

Very disappointing copy of this film. I saw it on TCM as well and it was lovely copy they ran. There must be a way that Amazon ought to be held responsible for not rating the quality of these films when they are as bad as pirated versions.

UNACCEPTABLE, BELOW PAR transfer to DVD,
This review is from: The Ambassador's Daughter (DVD)
This movie was originally shot in widescreen with wonderful scenic views of Paris, exquisite gowns by Dior, a still beautiful Olivia de Havilland (although pushing 40 -- looking at least 10 years younger), a young handsome John Forsythe and a terrific supporting cast including the always wonderful Myrna Loy -- with Tommy Noonan providing comic relief, as usual. While not the most entertaining movie ever made, certainly entertaining enough that I always seem to find myself watching it on TCM when they show it. Their televised version is in the original widescreen with bright vivid colors and a very sharp picture quality....so obviously a print of it in very good condition exists. As for this DVD edition -- it's PAN & SCAN and half the image is missing with the sides cut off -- and on top of that -- the picture quality is murky, fuzzy, out of focus and almost blotchy. UNWATCHABLE....and certainly doesn't do the film the justice it deserves. Better off waiting for the next airing on TCM, they do show it with frequency, and burn your own DVR, which would yield must better results than what's on this DVD. Save your money. The producers of this DVD should be ashamed of themselves.

I have not seen this movie in years, but it is just as good as I remembered it. I really enjoyed seeing it again.

Love the movie, disappointed with the quality of the dvd,
This review is from: The Ambassador's Daughter (DVD)
I saw this movie on TV and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the DVD recording that they used. You would get better quality if you just recorded the movie off the TV. It is such a shame!!!

Very, very light,

This is the 1956 comedy with Edward Arnold, John Forsythe, Myrna Loy, Olivia De Haveland, and Tommy Noonan. The script is embarrassingly bad. There are no laughs. The only highlight is the fashion designed by Dior. An exception even to that, however, is the hat worn by Myrna Loy in the early scenes of the film. It looks as though an arrow was stuck in it. For entertainment on any level, this is close to zero. Even the finest actors can't do much with writing of this sort.

I had purchased a DVD of Ambasador's Daughter some months ago on DVD. I throughly enjoyed the romantic comedy... both the acting and fashions.... BUT the movie which was filmed in wide-screen was squeezed into a tv frame. The cars were foreshortened, and scenery somewhat wierd. I searched and found the VHS tape with Amazon hopefully to replace the DVD. Unfortunately the tape was no better than the DVD. It would have been better is someone whould have taken the time and made the effort to develop a print closer to the original.

The Ambassadors Daughter,
This review is from: The Ambassador's Daughter (DVD)
I saw this movie when it first came out and enjoyed it so much that I went to see it again a few weeks later. Granted it is a light comedy but , for me, very entertaining. Last night I saw it again on TCM and really enjoyed seeing it again. Unfortunately several other reviews commented on the bad DVD so I won't be ordering it from Amazon.com. Too bad. Adolphe Menjou mistaken for a dirty old man and his wife's attempt to explain it away are hilarious.
