Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Moving is hard enough for anyone, but Amber struggles with leaving the home where her family lived before her father moved out and her mother remarried. Meanwhile, Dad starts a relationship with her new dance instructor, and a looming standardized test raises concerns about Amber’s ability to focus on schoolwork. Still, she navigates through the difficulties with a little help from her friends, family, and teachers. One of the more appealing characters in the relatively bland world of beginning chapter books, Amber manages to hit the sweet spot once again in this lively first-person narrative. Not only does she have flaws but she makes real mistakes, suffers for them, and tries to make amends in ways that are meaningful to others. Her ongoing difficulties in dealing with her weekend father and her stepfather are dealt with honestly. The illustrations, by a newcomer to the series, were not available in the prepublication copy. In their second volume, Coville and Levy continue Danziger’s Amber Brown series with wit, style, and intelligence. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1950. His family lived in farm territory, about twenty miles north of Syracuse. Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, where he spent a great deal of time as a child, dodging cows and chores to the best of his ability. As a young reader he loved Mary Poppins and Dr. Dolittle, and still has fond memories of rising ahead of the rest of his family so he could huddle in a chair and read THE VOYAGES OF DR. DOLITTLE. He also read lots of things that people consider junk (Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and zillions of comic books). His only real regret is the time he spent watching television, when he could have been reading instead. (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!)

His first book, THE FOOLISH GIANT, was published in 1978. It was illustrated by his wife, Katherine, whom he had married in 1969. This was followed in 1979 by SARAH'S UNICORN, also illustrated by Katherine. After a long period of working separately, the Covilles began collaborating again with SPACE BRAT and GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE, both published in 1992.

Before getting published Bruce earned his living as a toymaker, a gravedigger, a cookware salesman, an assembly line worker, and finally as an elementary school teacher (second and fourth grades). He left teaching in 1981 to devote himself to becoming a full time writer - though it took another five years to achieve that goal!)

Bruce has published over 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN, INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, and THE MONSTER'S RING. In 2001 he founded Full Cast Audio, an audiobook company dedicated to creating unabridged, full cast recordings of the best in children's and young adult literature.

How is it possible that a beloved series lives on after the passing of its incredibly humorous and compassionate author?
An unbelievable job by Bruce Coville and Elizabeth Levy! It is very clear that these two fabulous authors had the highest regard for Paula Danziger and were able to keep our cherished Amber alive. Coville and Levy, like Danziger, have deep instincts into the ways kids think and know how to get kids to laugh.
I, and my students, were touched by this book and read through - from cover to cover - in record time. Great for discussion and for inspiring children to reach within themselves for personal essays.

This delightful story continues the adventures of Amber Brown as she is on the move through life. Now that her mom is remarried, Amber is moving out of her childhood home while fighting the trials and tribulations of fourth grade. It's tough stuff for any kid to handle. Balanced with clever humor, Amber Brown is on the Move is sure to delight its readers.

Coville and Levy continue Danziger's tradition of touching kids with the high and lows of life. On the Move will not disappoint.
