Emily is about 15 when this short novel (122 pages) opens and perhaps 19 or 20 when it ends, and she is becoming a bit impatient with her loving, but conventional, parents. She becomes involved in complicated ways, both rewarding and damaging, with the Tyrenes, a distinctly less conventional family who live in Amberstone, the name of part of the town in which she lives. (I can't really see the relevance of the word 'Exit' in the title.) All the characters in the book are well drawn, though Feinstein's idiosyncratically punctuated way of conveying their speech and thought (e.g. `I have to. Pack. Get ready. Find somewhere to live. Things like that.') does little to give them individual voices. The story line is a little desultory, and for quite some time one doesn't know where it is heading. But it does work towards a sophisticated end.
