Perfect for Zaurus 5600 PDA,
By
This review is from: AmbiCom WL1100C-CF Compactflash 11MBPS Adapter (Personal Computers)
Instantly worked on my Sharp Zaurus 5600.
1 - Update zaurus OS to version 2 (dowload it from the Sharp Site and follow instructions from the site: Remove battery, press reset button, reboot.. etc.) 2 - Once the Zaurus reboots: Go to Settings->Network and enter the appropiate settings (SSID name, WEP key - if any, etc). /// IT WILL NOT WORK IF YOU SKIP THIS FIRST 2 STEPS !!! /// 3 - Insert the CF Card, light on the CF will start blinking while searching for a wireless connection - When connection is stablished, light stays on. 4 - Open Opera browser and start surfing the web. -------------------- Additional comments: -------------------- a) The pages download incredibly fast. b) I have a linksys 802.11b wireless router. c) I did not use at all the CD drivers that came with the CF card.. I think the CD is used only for the Pocket PC PDAs. If you own a Zaurus go buy this card right now and you will not go through all the suffering of trying different cards and sending them back to the vendor because they do not work !

I had a Linksys WCF12 that would RARELY work with my Axim X5 running WM2003, even using the updated drivers and all the posted tricks. Really frustrating, and Linksys support was worthless.
I bought this card three days ago, received it today, loaded the driver and popped it into the CF slot. Voila! It just plain works, without fuss, pleading or incantations. The power draw is slightly higher than Belkin's equivalent card, but the form factors are almost identical and the shipping from Amazon was free. A great purchase!

I got this card as a replacement for another brand which didn't work reliably and so far I am satisfied with it. I had no difficulty installing it on my Dell Axim X5 running WM2003. Ambicom has drivers for both Pocket PC 2002 and WM2003 on their website. The card quickly connects to the Verizon Hotspots that I subscribe to. My only complaint is that this card's power consumption rate is pretty high. Overall, it is a good deal though.

I have it with me for about 3 months now and works great on my Dell Axim X5 running on PPC2002. It works on wardriving tools such as Pocket warrior and Air sniffer when using the Intersil reference drivers.

The card is based on the Prism chipset - it is supported by Linux (e.g., Zaurus), and I believe most Windows versions. The range was better than that of a comparable Linksys card. A very good, easy to install, card.

I bought this item for a Dell Axim x5 and it works great. A little work to setup and I haven't noticed much drain on the battery. Good buy!!!

I regret I purchased this product. It never work in my HP iPaq hx2110. I had try everthing, download newer driver from AmbiCom websiet and tried troublshoot tips from website. Nothing work!
I also purchased a Linksys WCF54G from Amazon and it works in the same HP iPaq hx2110 without any problem. Can I return AmiCom Wireless CF card and exchange for something else?

Before trying this product, I tried to get a Netgear MA701 card to work with my Ipaq 2215 but it was very flaky. Most of the times it would not even find my WAP.
This card was working about 2 minutes out of the box. If you're using PPC 2003, make sure you download the latest drivers from the Ambicom site. DO NOT use the drivers in the CD. Install the drivers BEFORE you insert the card into your PDA. Once the drivers are installed, soft reset your device. After the soft reset, insert the card into the PDA and you should be ready to surf. You may have to go into the wireless settings to set up your encryption, etc. but other than that, it's a piece of cake. I did not give it 5 stars because the Ambicom drivers don't work with some of the Wifi utilities out there. However, you can find some generic Intersil drivers (that's the chipset in this CF card) that will let you get around that issue. Search Google for "Axim and Ambicom" and you should get a hit on a site with the Intersil drivers.

Installed on my iPAQ h2215 without any problems. Use the driver off their website. Don't plug in the CF Card until you have installed the driver. It is power hungry. I got about three hours of surfing/downloading data, from a fully charged battery, before the low battery warning sounded. (Warning set at 25% remaining). For the price I recommend it. Just keep a travel charger with you. The Belkins Sync Travel Pak is great.

The description for this adapter claims to support "full privacy". Don't expect that it means "supports anything better than old, WEP-standard security"--it doesn't. The typos on the box copy should have been a clue.
With some hesitation, I returned this adapter for another one by the same company, and the difference was surprising. For only a few dollars more, you get a 802.11g-capable card that supports the more-secure WPA standard, and what appear to be much better drivers. For the small difference in price, there's no reason to buy this card instead of the 802.11g model. |
