I got this item as a gift for a retiree and retirement party after buying two other items that the seller never shipped - got my money back though. Luckily I did this far enough in advance. After the party, the retiree friend of mine said it doesn't work at all. It says it takes up to 24 hours and took a look at it, then called the company. They stated that even though in that room and house there is ATT DSL and a wireless modem that allows him to use a laptop, that the signal has to be strong enough to support this and it doesn't always work. Too late to return it and not the sellers fault but I guess if you are in NY not in San Francisco it will work????

So he is going to re-gift it.

Before buying this product, I would recommend that you check if you can return it after a certain period of time if it is a gift since the manufacturer admitted that if it doesn't work it means the signal isn't strong enough to connect FOR THIS PARTICULAR product.

First off, if you are considering this or any other Ambient Devices gadget, it is absolutely essential that you check the coverage map on Ambient's website, and take a good hard look at the area you plan on using this device. If you're in a spot where it's hard to get radio or cellular coverage, chances are this device won't work for you.

This gadget is a standalone item that gets a data feed from Ambient, and shows you the current state of the Dow Jones, NASDAQ, and S&P 500 exchanges. It gives the current position, change, and a rough graph of activity over the day, as well as the time of day and if the market is currently open or not. It can also display your custom portfolio, but that comes at an extra cost per month. The 3 main stats are provided free of charge with the device.

That's all.

It works by receiving a low speed data stream broadcast by Ambient over the Flex pager network, so if you have pager coverage in your area this will probably work ok. It uses 3 AAA batteries, and they seem to last a decent amount of time - at least 3-4 months per set.

Since it has the time of day on it as well, I'm using it as a geeky desk clock, something for which it works quite well.

This was a Christmas present for my son. He is on the go all day and keep up with the stock market with just a glance.

Please come out with a larger screen.

I have had one since about Oct 2007, right about its release date.
Unfortunately Ambient discontinued coverage in my area on May 1 2011.
It was awful to watch the stock market crash, appalling.
It was reassuring to watch the recovery.
Then it went offline. I have called and been in contact.
They confirmed that fact.
So sad.
If a company begins to contract, one wonders about its longevity.
A great toy while the fun lasted.

Received this as a Christmas gift, followed all instructions, sounds like you can track the stocks in your porfolio. No way, it averages everything, if I have to go to the internet why do I need this. Plus customer help was not help, they sound like arrogant little kids. Best of luck if you buy this. P.S. it might make a nice conversation piece if you place it on your desk, but that's only if they don't know anything at all about the stock markets. good luck and hope they go bankrupt soon.
