5.0 out of 5 stars Puts you to Sleep
This cd is supposed to put you into a deep sleep (called "delta" sleep). It worked for me. When I got the cd I put it on the cd player just to hear it and it made me very drowsy even though it was about 4 hours until bedtime. I play it all night and I wake up less often. I also remember more dreams after listening to it all night. The music is a kind of subtle,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons of this CD
I purchased this CD along with the others in the series...Classical, Natural and Soothing. I am not sure if there was a flaw in production or what the deal is. I have a CD alarm clock next to the bed that I listen to the CDs on. For the other three the "right" volume is 4. To even hear this one I have to turn it 7 or 8. I also remember more dreams after listening to it all night. The music is a kind of subtle, low-pitched white noise, but it's a musical white noise, not like a toned-down radio static white noise. I would recommend it if you are having trouble sleeping or waking up a lot during the night or if you just want a more relaxed slumber.

But once I get it to where I can actually hear it, I do like the CD and it does help me fall asleep. I like it a whole lot better then the "Soothing" which annoys me to pieces.

Would be great if it was recorded at a decent volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm!, April 10, 2004

I recently purchased a set of these CDs by Dr. Thompson: ambient, classical and natural music for sleep. I've had on and off insomnia for my whole life, and NOTHING has every helped like Dr. Thompson's CDs. My husband and I listen to them almost every night, and we both noticed a marked improvement in the quality of our sleep. (He wasn't having insomnia, yet he is sleeping better anyway.) After about a month, I have found myself needing less sleep, because I am sleeping so soundly and waking up refreshed.

For the people for whom the CDs didn't work, well, you have to have an open mind and "play along" and allow yourself to become relaxed while listening. Laying there thinking "this isn't working" will probably prevent you from falling asleep.

The "music" isn't great itself, it's more of a soothing soundscape than music, so don't buy this CD if you are looking for general music to listen to. It has one purpose, and that is to lull you into a good night's rest.

I recommend the ambient music CD (new agey and light) and the natural music CD (crickets and such and ambient music. The classical music CD is a little distracting, although they are beautiful pieces and worth owning on CD, however I find myself listening to the progression of the individual pieces and not falling asleep as quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very relaxing background noise, October 16, 2002

Before I bought this CD, I would sometimes feel like I didn't sleep very deeply and was easily woken up. Not any more. We used to sleep with the television on for some background noise, but now we put this CD in and use the repeat function so that it plays all night. I sleep very deeply now and rarely wake up in the middle of the night. My husband has been sleeping better too. The tracks fade into each other so that you can't tell where one ends and the next begins. The music on the first track is an almost underwater/in-the-womb sound. I can't tell you what the other tracks sound like because I usually don't stay awake that long! And like another reviewer stated, I remember my dreams more and they seem much more vivid, but then again, I wasn't remembering them very well before so who knows. I plan on buying the Delta Sleep System (also by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson) for some variation.

This is just one more example of how good this doctors CD's for stress and sleep problems is. I put it on continuous play and sleep soundly with wonderful dreams that allow me to wake refreshed and in a marvelous mood. Highly recommended, along with all his other CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, January 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Ambient Music for Sleep (Audio CD)
For several nights while listening to this cd, I fell asleep before getting to the second track. Several days later, I had to listen to it just to find out what it sounded like! The music is very soft and low. It uses synthesizers; it is flowing and very ambient. This is a definite stress reliever to help you fall asleep.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thompson's systems..., August 29, 2004

I agree with some of the reviewers that the music he employs on his cds is definitley annoying and does not assist in inducing sleep. I bought his Delta Sleep System and it is awful. I've never listened to it more than 5 times. I later bought the Alpha Relaxation System which isn't so bad as the synthesized music is minimal and it does help you relax. I particularly like the water sounds he employs in this set. I also spent more money on his Theta Wave system and I was disappointed, as there is only one section of the wave file that I can tolerate.

I realize the key to getting the embedded brain wave pulses to work is to distract the conscious mind, but the synthesized music he employs is more than just a distraction and God only knows what it is doing to your brain in the process. It is the kind of music that could possibly induce temporolimbic seizures in my opinion and I know about that from experience. My Uncle ran a water pumping station to control water in the fields he farmed and I was periodically exposed to this loud noise. It was unavoidable at times. Looking back I realize my sleep was disturbed because of it and I was suffering from temporolimbic seizures. The Delta and Theta systems are just too disturbing to be effective and so I don't listen to them anymore and I feel I've thrown away $100 of my money for something I can't use.

He also claims that many of the sounds he employs are sounds from space. If that racket is going on in space then "Houston, we have a problem". I believe space is relatively quiet, except for the now occasional satellite moving around.

I personally have found more natural sounds, soothing and relaxing and sleep inducing, like Tom Kenyon's Soma, that employs natural voice chanting with embedded brain wave pulses. Also an excellent sleep inducing cd I found at Borders in my location is Summer Rain, A Day on Cape Cod, The Atmosphere Collection. This Cd is 60 minutes of pure natural rain recorded by Toby Mountain. I fell asleep in my chair listening to it. It puts me to sleep every night. A portion of the cost of this Cd is also donated to the Nature Conservancy. Another relaxing Cd/Dvd combination is the Elements collection, Elements: Desert Light is the one I have. The music is very relaxing but it is rather of poor quality, as in there could be more bass sounds, but considering the cost of the set at $5.98 it isn't that bad. It relaxes me. Beyond the Reef is also relaxing as it is underwater video of the Great Barrier Reef.

I've really been into the relaxation thing after years of listening to rock music. Sometimes you just need a break. I have also found Classical music Adagios to be very relaxing, the most relaxing I've found so far are the Evening Adagios Cd and the After Hours, a relaxing way to End the Day Cd.

I hope this helps some of you. I will emntion that I am not associated personally nor professionally with any of the people who have produced or created the cds I have mentioned. I'm just an individual who suffers from Sleep problems like a lot of people. I do not work in the Music industry either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drowing in Ambient Beauty, November 28, 2006
This review is from: Ambient Music for Sleep (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because after a full 10 hour day of work as a customer service representative my mind is gone. I feel so stressed after the day is over and I need something to help me unwind. When I am ready to go to sleep I pop this cd into my surround sound system and let it play. As you listen it is like drifting into an angelic cloud of beauty. I fall alseep everytime. I know some people have complained about the type of sounds on it but to be fair it is called Ambient music. If you are not familiar to this type of music. Ambient is very subtle sounds with minimalistic changes in chords. It is meant as background music and is not very melodic. If you are looking for more relaxing music I suggest checking out yanni or something like that. But if you want to drift to sleep fast, give this is a try. Keep an open mind and this will work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, January 11, 2005

It's a big stretch to call this music. A more descriptive title would be Ambient Sounds. It's more like variable white noise, or a low, almost inaudible base monotone with hissing. It may work if you want background sounds all night, but I prefer to listen, relax, and then turn it off when I'm sleepy.

I bought Peaceful Music for Sleep for our daughter's naps. It's also by Jeffrey Thompson, and it is music-like a gentle flute and piano duet. It certainly seems to help our daughter sleep, and puts me in a restful and peaceful mood too.

I expected Ambient Music to be similar, so I was very disappointed. I can't listen to this CD long enough to find out if it works. I suggest you listen to the sample if you can. (I didn't.) On my computer it sounds like very quiet, almost inaudible hissing. That's what this CD is like. Obviously it works for some, but if you want relaxing music, try Peaceful Music for Sleep instead.
