When the air pressure is lower than it was at the time the body was sealed, the water level in the spout will rise above the water level in the body and when the air pressure is higher, the water level in the spout will drop below the water level in the body.

The concept that 'decreasing atmospheric pressure predicts stormy weather' was postulated by a French physicist named Lucien Vidie, and it's the basis for a weather prediction device called a storm glass or liquid barometer. It consists of a glass container with a sealed body, half filled with water.
This glass barometer does what it promises: it measures high and low air pressure. Right now I am watching the water rise to indicate a low pressure system and arriving storm (it started raining right now). This morning the water was low in the spout indicating high pressure in the air. Sure enough, it was sunny with no clouds outside. Living in Colorado- where the weather can vary throughout the day- makes this glass globe barometer entertaining. Additionally, I like that I can change out the water color at will with the handy syringe and tube. Finally, the included drip plate helps on days when the water rises to the top. In all it was well worth the buy for me.

This simple little barometer is far more sensitive than the typical medium to low end weather station. A change of just a few 100ths of an inch (from the NWS website for local conditions) of mercury is visible. And its not affected by altitude like any dial or electronic ones. Most dial and electronic ones are limited to a max of 3 or 4 thousand feet. While this one doesnt give a number for inches of mercury, its very sensitive to change, which is the main reason for owning one. I bought mine to see if there was a connecion between barometric pressue and joint pain.

I love this! Very cool item. Use any color water you like. This would be a great gift for virtually anyone! The price is right and it's really easy to fill, use, and understand the changes you see. Next time I need a gift for someone hard to buy for, I'll remember this.

I have ordered these twice, first time was for myself and gifts, second time are for gifts.I love this! I live in Colorado, and our weather changes constantly. 88 degrees one day, snow the next. This barometer gives you a heads up on the approaching change, and many times you know about the change before the weather people do. I find myself looking at it many times during the day, to see if the liquid has gone up the side chamber, letting you know a change is coming. Shipped, and arrives super fast, packed carefully, and wonderfully. Highly recommend this for yourself or a gift. Really cool! Great for that hard to buy for person, or someone who has everything.

I looked everywhere to replace a storm barometer for my Mother who believes in this concept like the Bible. It was not easy to locate this in our rural area. Thanks to Amazon, My Mom is now once again a better weather predictor than the paid TV news man! This little glass globe is amazing to see in action.

I ordered on a Monday and it arrived on Wednesday. Standard shipping! Amazingly fast! Storm glass is beautiful. It came with the syringe and tubing for filling (which I didn't expect) and the instructions were perfect. Clear, concise, and to the point. The actual globe is the size of a baseball, and the whole thing stands about 6" tall. I paid $11.99 plus tax and shipping. Great price, great barometer! I'm very happy with it!

accurate, well made, fun to use . the instructions about refilling when water evaporates could be clearer, but it's excellent other than that. Would definitely buy it again. To know in advance: it requires distilled water (and food coloring)
