Easy to set up.
Larry Curtis
An added feature to the units is how they retain the history, along with a time stamp, of the highs and lows in temperature, humidity and air pressure.

Reading bad review after bad review of weather stations, I was very hesitant to buy one. The WS-1170 was one of the few units to consistantly receive good reviews so I took a shot with one. I decided to go with the 2-Kit for a few extra dollars so that I could have a second unit on a different floor. The WS-1170 was simple to set up. It found the atomic clock signal with no problem and when I periodically check both units readings against the weather posted on the Internet, they are amazingly accurate. Sure, you don't get wind speed or direction, or rain fall amounts but for the money, I think the WS-1170 is a value, even more so if you buy the 2-Kit. It's great to see temperature, humidity (indoor and outdoor) as well as the barometric pressure at a glance and its nice to have units in two locations. The outdoor sensor is attached to a north facing wall (as recommended) under an overhang to keep it away from precipitation (as also recommended) and both base units, less than 100ft from the sensor, have no problem picking up the signal. An added feature to the units is how they retain the history, along with a time stamp, of the highs and lows in temperature, humidity and air pressure. If you are looking for an easy to use, accurate, simple weather station, I highly recommend the WS-1170 2-Kit.

I bought this Ambient Weather station after disappointing experiences with two similar products by La Crosse Technology, which developed technical problems within less than two years (I don't remember what went wrong with the first one, but the second one stopped to detect any pressure variations after the last battery change a few weeks ago, thus the whole pressure trend / weather forecast part of the screen became useless). While I cannot predict if the Ambient Weather station will last longer than its predecessors, I can report at this time (after just one week of testing) that the two inside units look good (better LCD contrast than La Crosse) and show consistent temperatures, pressures, and humidities. They receive the WWVB (atomic clock) signal at locations in my house where the La Crosse devices were not able to receive it, and I am also able to place the outside unit in a better protected location, which was too far away for the two La Crosse weather stations to obtain a stable radio connection. So, altogether I am very happy and optimistic. I also ordered the humidity calibration kit from the same dealer, but have not used it so far because the humidity readings I have seen so far seemed to be consistent and realistic.

This really had the potential to be just about best in class as a basic indoor/outdoor weather station. It's fully calibratable and has everything but a rain gauge but where it falls short is the dark low contrast display. Instead of using a medium-bright silver background to provide some contrast like the La Crosse equivalent the Ambient Weather's display has a low-contrast medium-dark green background that's a challenged to read from any distance in all but bright light. Honestly if the displays were better it would be a 5-star product and if you can live with the display it's a bargain.

I received this about a week and a half ago. Setup was easy, following the directions in the manual that comes with it. I got a dual station/single sensor package. Both stations had a little trouble picking up the WWV clock signal, but eventually got themselves in sync by late evening.

I'm only using this in the default mode - I have not tried to program any alarms and such. No issues with this product.

Before I start let me say that I think most of these weathers stations are made by the same company or companies in China, and re-branded for sales to resellers in the United States. Look at the comparable La Crosse Technology WS-9020U-IT Intelligent Forecast Station to the Ambient WS-1171. The La Crosse unit is another addition to weather stations that failed and was returned in 2009. At which I ordered an Ambient WS-1170, the predecessor to the current set of WS-1171's.

-The Bad-
On Dec 13, I ordered from Amazon the set of WS-1171's for a gift to my weather obsessed #1 daughter and son-in-law. Removed the old 1170 remote sensor and installed the new remote sensor, powered up the two new 1171's, They sat side by side so I can check the readouts for consistency. 24 hours later I noticed one of the 1171's was not reporting the massive change in barometric pressure while its mate did. I emailed Ambient, got in touch with a person who seemed to be, at the time a competent support person who after some back and forth emails, sent out a new display console the Friday before Christmas, so I had a fighting chance to get these items packed and wrapped for Christmas. When received I added it to my collection of display consoles, my 2009 WS-1170 and now 3 WS-1171 sitting on my desk. 24 hours later, I noticed that the replacement 1171, was not updating with the WWVB signal so it would not sync the correct date and time. The original units updated when I first installed batteries within about 10 minutes leaving me with a little programing to set time zones, 24 hour time and daylight time observance. Since it was now the weekend of Christmas, no wrapping was in my future.

-The Ugly-
On the Tuesday after Christmas, I had the four little beastly Weather Stations sitting on my desk.
