The episcopate of Ambrose of Milan (374-97 CE) is crucial to understanding the developing relationship between the Church and the Roman Empire in late antiquity. About the Author

J. H. W. G. Liebeschuetz is emeritus professor of classics at the University of Nottingham and a fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of many books, including The Decline and Fall of the Roman City.
