Book Description

5 and upK and up
An unpretentious coconut that teaches a cornucopia of ignorant fruits to look beyond their differences, and together, they discover the beauty in diversity.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–Some berries, citrus, watermelon, figs, bananas, and other fruit are happily playing at the market when something hard, brown, and hairy falls into their midst. Nobody knows what it is or where it comes from. It's certainly not one of us, accuses the pompous pineapple. The odd intruder explains that he is a coconut, and a fruit, just like them. And to prove it, he removes his shell so the others can see his smooth innards and taste his sweet milky cream. The moral of the story is stated on the closing pages, You must never judge a fruit by the color of its skin…. What truly matters always comes from within. Aside from several bad rhymes (warbling and laughing, air and fear, pleased and agreed), it is disturbing that the coconut cheerfully opens himself up and lets the other fruit eat him in order to gain acceptance. The digitally rendered, cartoon art, featuring fruits with open mouths, pointed noses, and bulging eyes, is unappealing. With no explanation of what ambrosia is, many readers will not understand the title.–Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Lessons, October 15, 2006

Important lessons can be learned from this book. In today's society, people sometimes take diversity and tolerance for granted. It is important that we instill these virtues within our youth in order to preserve culture and promote peace.

Ambrosia teaches children (and even adults) to embrace our differences and appreciate what lies beneath the color of our skin. Everyone I've shared this book with reads it with a smile upon their face and an understanding of how positive interaction between different cultures can enrich our society.

A wonderful book teaching diversity with a marvelous little story. One of the best books of this type I've ever seen. I strongly recommend this as a standard, must have, children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love it!, October 20, 2006
This review is from: Ambrosia (Hardcover)
As a mother of four young children, I read many childrens books. I love it when I come accross a book that I enjoy as well as my children do. The pictures are colorful and interesting, the story is entertaining and important. Acceptance of our differences is a critical lesson that needs to be understood by people of all ages. This book helps children understand diversity in a fun way.
