Ambrosia's Best Work. Engineered by Alan Parsons, November 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
One of my all time favorites! Very creative with a pleasing mix of multiple harmonies, a variety of string and percussion instruments and thought provoking lyrics. Alan Parsons works his engineering magic using leading edge technology of the times to create excellent sound quality. The band spent many hours experimenting with various sounds before laying down any tracks. An attention to detail you don't often see with today's artists. Album has a continuity throughout anchored by recognizable hits of Nice, Nice, Very Nice (inspired by writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr.) and Holding On to Yesterday. A must for the collector of timeless music.

ESSENTIAL LISTENING, January 16, 2010
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
Living in a place where music and bands in record companies, stores and radio only came on fearful limited basis by the time this album was released, I did have the chance to come across the very tuneful but intrincate and finally fascinating NICE NICE VERY NICE. Now, several years later (gulp), I've had the chance to re-discover what I always thought was a very interesting album as a whole, beyond its two great hit-songs, and one which particularly attracted me for the connection with Alan Parsons (creator of other of my all-time favourites TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION OF EDGAR ALAN POE). I was also intrigued to read about the works done wby the band and Leonard Bernstein. As far as I know, not any rock band comes to work in these areas.
I recently came across some samples of this album on the net as well as the succeeding four AMBROSIA albums. I can only say today, after the "nice, very nice" experience of finding out that AMBROSIA was far more than a melodic pop/ballad band, some 20 years ago, I've been again plesantly surprised by the intensity of the band's creations that arise my permanent interest in "clever" pop-rock. The kind that survives the radio wave stage to become a classic sound. I find it difficult to point at any specific track or album in the AMBROSIA discography I don't like. Vocal quality and instrumental interaction besides an openly progressive feel to relevant portions of it relocate AMBROSIA as one of my favourite bands; one that, to no surprise, toured with such giants as Fleetwood Mac in their golden days. If I were you, as soon as you finish reading these lines, I'd give a detailed try/listen to AMBROSIA, SOMEWHERE I'VE NEVER TRAVELLED, LIFE BEYOND L.A. the underated ROAD ISLAND (and its killer meant-to-be-radio-hit HOW CAN YOU LOVE ME, luckily rescued by WOUNDED BIRD RECORDS) and even the "poppiest" of the studio series, ONE EIGHTY, on which I not only enjoy the singles we all know and love, but also raise my eyebrows all the time with such solid repeated-listening pieces as LIVING ON MY OWN, that makes the perfect balance between melodic and fusion/prog rock, balance that AMBROSIA so well crafted, avoiding all conflict purists could find between these worlds. Really NICE rencounter.

First album out of the gate is a classic, July 16, 2011
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
Must be nice to create a classic album the first time out of the gate! The only problem is how to top it with your next albums. This is not uncommon ( eg Boston's first album). A very talented group of musicians. David Pack has a great voice and the songs are really well crafted ( AABA). Especially Nice Nice, Very Nice. I love this tune. The lyrics by Kurt Vonnegut and the melody and harmonies are really cool. Another great tune is Momma Frog, which is more progressive rock than anything else. Check out the middle part ( it's backwards !) They also have their only Hit " I Keep Holdin' On" on this album. But if you buy the CD for this song thinking the others will be similar, you'll be disappointed. Each song is different but still well crafted. If you only buy one Ambrosia CD, make it this one.
