5.0 out of 5 stars Ambrosia among best debuts ever
My words could not possibly add anymore to what's been said already. Instead, I want to take you back about 28 years to 1975.

I was a junior in high school when I first heard "Holdin' On To Yesterday" and decided to buy the LP. I couldn't wait to get home and play that song over and over. Now, usually, I would skip from song to song and play just enough to get a "taste"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant early progressive album
This is one of those albums that will evoke an emotional but irrational response. People who grew up listening to this album will say this is the greatest album ever. And it is a very good album, it's just not that great. There isn't a bad song on the album, but none them are perfect. Even the fantastic classic, Nice, Nice, Very Nice (words by Kurt Vonnegut) has...

My words could not possibly add anymore to what's been said already. Instead, I want to take you back about 28 years to 1975.

I was a junior in high school when I first heard "Holdin' On To Yesterday" and decided to buy the LP. I couldn't wait to get home and play that song over and over. Now, usually, I would skip from song to song and play just enough to get a "taste" for a new album before playing all the way through. This time, though, about 30 seconds into "Nice, Nice, Very Nice" I was so mesmerized that I couldn't lift the stylus from the record. I lay down on my bed, closed my eyes and went on a journey that never ended. This group is that good. Every song is that good. David Pack and Joe Puerta vocals are that phenomenal. This IS one of the very best recordings (and debuts) of all time. Like many others, I wondered why this took so long to get to CD. "Time Waits For No One"...but we all waited for this, and it was worth the wait! I can't begin to tell how superb, vibrant and powerful each song is. Find out for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have done died and gone to heaven, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
Prog rock with Beatleish writing and produced by Alan Parsons. The best of both worlds. This album, and their next, 'Somewhere I've Never Travelled' are studies in how to make innovative and original music, without being enamored by overplaying or overly complex time signatures, etc. This band toured with Styx, and interestingly I find a lot of styles that made their way into Styx's music seemed to be previewed by this band. The songwriting is absolutely brilliant, the instruments are played with REAL emotion, the sounds are well chosen to suit the song. Only recently discovering this band's talent, I always knew this band for their radio hits, which were well-written but rather in the vein of adult contemporary. This album, in contrast, is real rock and roll (at times), with clear melodies, surprising lyrical depth, and jazzy-pop playing, and above all, a sense that they're having fun doing this and not taking it too seriously. The last song is one of the best, with a thundering pipe organ underscoring some fiery vocals that recall 'Sixty Years On' by Elton John.

This is one of the first two albums I bought when I was a teenager. I was lured by the radio hit, "Holdin' On To Yesterday." After buying it I realized that all the songs were probably better than the smash single (which was fantastic and the reason I bought the album in the first place!). This whole album is tight, the lyrics have depth, and the album is still one of my very favorites even after all these years. Complex but not cluttered with technical effects. "World Leave Me Alone" has an energy that must be heard to be described. This is one of the only rock albums I have ever heard that is fantastic from start to finish with no filler. It is the reason I bought their next three albums as they came out.

5.0 out of 5 stars America's Answer To Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and ELP., June 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
This amazing debut album by Ambrosia is America's answer to Yes,
Genesis, King Crimson, and ELP. The album is a beautiful blend of
progressive rock, pop, and rock n roll. It was mixed by Alan
Parsons, and was the first album that Alan worked on outside of
England. All of the songs are wonderfully crafted and excellently
recorded. Drink Of Water with the incredible pipe organ is a true
masterpiece. Mama Frog, Make Us All Aware, and Time Waits For No
One are all classic prog rock songs. This is a must have CD to be
sure.

An utterly brilliant release. The music is mesmerizing, soaring and clever clever clever, filled with endless surprises. And the mixing by Alan Parsons cannot be described. Parsons is the greatest genius who has ever sat behind a mixing console. You will never appreciate the full magnitude of this CD untill you play it through a high quality amp into a pair of high quality headphones. The richness and clarity of every single note cannot be matched any other way.
This is a band and an album that never got close to the acclaim they deserved. Don't cheat yourself by missing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Waited For Years For This!!!!, December 25, 2005
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
I waited years for this recording to come out on CD in the U.S. It was well worth it!!! Their isn't a bad song on it. I haven't given any of my reviews 5 stars, but this is the one exception so far. My favorites are Make Us All Aware and Drink Of Water. My only criticism is that it is too short!!! If I was stranded on a desert island and could only bring 5 CD's with me this would be one of them!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Closest Thing to Perfection in Rock, February 12, 2001
By
Julie May (Gibsonia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ambrosia (Audio CD)
I first heard this album after Ambrosia had a couple of big hits with a couple of highly forgetable songs. At the time, I could not believe this was the same band. In my opinion, the writing, performance and production values on this work are as close to perfect as I have ever heard on a rock album. As a non religous person, it has always surprised me that I am so attached to an album with such religious overtones (make us all aware being the most obvious). After all, Ambrosia means "food of the gods," does it not? But, every once in a while, one discovers a work, be it film, music, book, etc. that just simply "works." A piece that seems to have been made at a magic time when everything just clicked and something special came about. This is such a work. I would not change a thing. I am so thankful it finally came out on CD. My tired, worn LP can now get a well deserved rest. I simply cannot wait for it to arrive. If you like rock with a thoughtful, classic touch (a la Procol Harum) do not, I repeat, DO NOT miss this masterpiece. You will not be disappointed. Thanks to Ambrosia for more than thirty years of enjoyment. If you never played another note, this work would outpace the efforts of most other artists and exists at a level to which they can only hope to aspire.
