Book Description

May 20, 1993
The Story of Emergency Transportation of Sick and Wounded through the Centuries. One of the very few books ever published on this subject. Documents the history of emergency medical transportation from 900 A.D. to the 1970's. With over one hundred and fifty illustrations, the work begins in depth with the eighteenth-century medical services initiated by Dominique-Jean Larrey, a surgeon in Napoleon's army, then details the evolution of the ambulance through peace and war up till the modern era.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"this great little history book has been resurrected by the publishers for our edification and enjoyment. And pure enjoyment it is" -- 9-1-1 MAGAZINE, MAY/JUNE 1992

"well-documented and superbly illustrated" "should be appealing to a wide audience, emergency providers, and students of medical history alike. -- New York State Journal of Medicine, February 1992

Competently written, this book will find special appeal with those interested in "professional" cars and emergency medical service. -- SAH JOURNAL, January-February 1991

From the Publisher

In the Spring of 1989, while researching a proposal for an ambulance exhibit at a New York museum, I "discovered" this book. What a find! But also, what a shame that Katherine Barkley's 'The Ambulance', which documents the long and proud history of emergency medical transportation from 900 A.D. to the 1970's, had been out of print for over 10 years and was virtually unknown and inaccessible to Emergency Medical Service professionals and ambulance enthusiasts of today.

So, I located the author and agreement was reached for me to republish the book. We decided to reprint as is, since revisions or updates would destroy its unique perspective, written as it was in the midst of major transformations in the nature of ambulance service. The days of "load and go" when quick transport to the hospital was the order of the day, was coming to a close. Emergency transport by ambulance was now going to be just one part of the emerging field of emergency medical services.

The history of emergency care has been long overlooked, and I feel most fortunate in playing a part in bringing this book-the only one ever published in this country exclusively devoted to the history of the ambulance-to you.
