5.0 out of 5 stars Kitchen Essential: Amco Bowl--6-Quart

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent bowl, except the capacity is wrong.
I should've listened to the previous reviewer. I'm not sure how these bowls are normally measured, but even though it claims a 6-quart capacity, in my tests using a liquid measuring cup, this bowl only holds up to 19 cups (4.75 quarts) before spilling over, which of course is an impractical level to fill a bowl. So 4 quarts is probably more accurate, and even then I'd be worried about mixing stuff over the edge depending on what's in it.

In spite of this, I've happily used it to mix dough and fillings, and as part of a makeshift double boiler with a 3qt pot. It's a sturdy stainless steel mixing bowl with a flat bottom and a brushed metal appearance, nothing special. It doesn't have a rubber bottom like some brands, but you can always put a rubber mat or damp kitchen towel under it if that bothers you. Just make sure you aren't actually planning on putting more than a gallon of stuff in it at one time.

Amco is a commercial line of heavy duty stainless steel products that are used in restaurant and home kitchens. I have a set of less expensive stainless steel bowls, but I packed them away when I discovered the Amco bowls. I like the idea that I can purchase exactly the size bowls that I need for cooking and baking.

This Amco 6-Quart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl is a convenient size. The flat bottom on this bowl means that you can place it on a counter (on top of a damp flour sack kitchen towel would prevent any slippage). There are many times you will want to use this bowl instead of using your stand mixer for making easy bread, muffin, brownie, and cake mix recipes from boxes, using an electric hand mixer or a wooden spoon. For example, chocolate brownie mixes usually recommend 50 stirs by hand, so you can hold the bowl by the rim with one hand and stir with the other.

Highly recommended! These bowls are dishwasher-safe, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual use of This Product, September 3, 2007

This product was recommended to me on a site about toilet training your cat. The bowl works very well for this purpose, but I recommend taping the bowl to the toilet so it doesn't slide around. The excellent construction of the bowl makes a resounding clang if the bowl falls into the toilet and this is not helpful when encouraging your cat to try something new.

I'm assuming that after I run the bowl through the dishwasher a few thousand times it will be an excellent mixing bowl. Until then, it is a very sturdy and highly recommended tool for cat training.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK bowl, but nothing great, August 14, 2010

This bowl is perfectly serviceable but probably not of the same quality of the earlier reviewer's samples. It's nicely finished but neither holds the advertised capacity (as commented on by many in the entire line) or is as substantial as I suspect the earlier examples were. While I assume it really is stainless steel, it looks and feels a lot more like spun aluminum.

The major problem with relying upon reviews is that amazon has been around for a long time by digital standards and a lot of these 5 star opinions stem from a decade ago. Manufacturers often change suppliers during a product's production life and basic consumer products, like mixing bowls, have a very long production life. Same problem with buying "Made in USA" products. What once was, may not be anymore and amazon should, but probably can't, be expected to upgrade their descriptions of 100,000's products unless the manufacture tells them. The bottom line is this bowl does it's job and is certainly larger than the largest bowl in any "3 bowl set". I haven't measured it with liquid, but I'm guessing it holds about 5 qts. So, if you need more than that get the 8 qt. size. If you really need a commercial quality heavy large bowl expect to pay a lot more for it at a commercial supply house.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprising find..., November 7, 2009

I own the 2 qt, 3 qt, 4.5 qt, and the 6.5 qt Amco stainless-steel mixing bowls. The review below is copied-and-pasted from my review of the 2 qt bowl. The bowls are all basically the same except for (obviously) capacity. One caveat--when I purchased this item, it was advertised as a 6 quart mixing bowl. Amazon has since revised the listing and it now more accurately shows a capacity of approximately 4.5 quarts.

***My 2-Quart Review***
Growing up, my parents had a set of nestable, stainless-steel mixing bowls in approximately 2 quart, 4 quart, 8 quart, and 12 quart sizes. We used them for everything--beating eggs, mixing a cake, marinating meats, etc. They were versatile, but thin walled and over the years, took a beating.

I was looking for a set of stainless-steel bowls, similar to those my parents had, for similar purposes. I had considered the All-Clad Stainless Mixing Bowl Set when I came across this Amco 2-Quart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl (along with the Amco 3-Quart Stainless Steel Mixing bowl, the Amco 4.5-Quart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl, and the Amco 6.5-Quart Stainless-Steel Mixing Bowl. Between the 4 individual bowls, I paid less than half what the All-Clad set would have cost me. Unfortunately, I was taking a gamble on quality as I am a fan (and user) of All-Clad cookware and know first hand the fine workmanship they put into their products. My take was that if these items turned out to be like the bowls my parents had, I'd ditch them in a few years for another set and still have gotten some good use out of them.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received the Amco products. They are heavy, solid, with a thicker gauge of stainless-steel that would seem to resist dents. There is a heft to these bowls. The matte finish resists scratches. They are dishwasher safe. They have a flattened bottom as to sit on a countertop without rolling around. All in all, I am glad I went with the Amco bowls and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for these basic kitchen tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, solid mixing bowl, April 27, 2008

I have a set of 3 different size Amco mixing bowls and use all of them frequently. This is the largest one I have and works great for mixing up meatloafs, doughs, large batches of cookies, etc. All the Amco bowls are very solid, commercial grade and stainless steel, with a nice edge for gripping and a large flat surface on the bottom so they don't move around much when mixing in them. They really hold up well over time (I've had mine for 5 years now) and go through the dishwasher if need be without a problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a six quart bowl., October 26, 2005
This review is from: Amco 6-Quart Stainless-Steel Mixing Bowl (Kitchen)
Although it says "6 qt" on the bottom of the bowl it actually holds just a hair over 4 quarts. I wouldn't consider this Amazon's fault, but the description is misleading. If I wanted a smaller bowl I would have ordered one.

Background:

I was looking for a sturdy general duty bowl in the kitchen. All I had before this bowl was a very flimsy mixing bowl from the $1 section in target that was a bear to clean as everything stuck to it and was terrible to mix in and I also have an 8 quart glass bowl which is fine but I needed a good second bowl.

What I liked:
- Very solid and rigid. It would be hard to dent this bowl.
- Very easy to clean no matter what you are mixing.

What I didn't like:
- Small. Like most reviews say, the bowls do not appear to be the advertised size. Amco's fault, not Amazon. After reading these reviews I ordered a 6 quart instead of four and I got in the 6, what I thought I would get in the 4.
- There was a small blemish on the inside of my bowl and after the first use a few more small discolored specs showed up. This has not happened outside the first use.

Conclusion:
I love this bowl! I will be ordering a few more different sizes eventually. I pitched my cheap plastic bowl after one use of this, its so easy to clean and very rigid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect bowl for me, December 5, 2006

I have owned this bowl for 2 years, and absolutely love everything about it. It's sturdy, but fairly light weight which makes it easy to manuever when turning the bowl or when pouring or scooping batter or dough out of it. I have a very high speed electric hand mixer, and the size and shape of this bowl work well to prevent splatter with cake batter. I bought this bowl for my sister, who is also thrilled with it. I plan to buy one for my mother as well, who has arthritic hands and needs something easy to grip and handle.
