Nothing can beat the taste of fresh artichokes in season, gently steamed with a clove and served simply with a bit of lemon or mayonnaise. This artichoke cooker from Amco offers an alternative to the nutrient-sapped boiled artichoke: cook perfect artichokes every time by gently steaming the leaves while boiling the heartier stem. To use, just trim the leaves and balance the artichoke in the basket, place in an 8-quart stockpot, and fill with water so the base of the artichoke is covered. The stand can also be used to cook broccoli and cauliflower, or to contain foods when deep-frying.

With minimal preparation, this cooker is an excellent way to steam an artichoke. Some pointers: With artichoke in place, the stand fits covered in an 8-quart stockpot (or larger), so be sure you have one big enough to handle the job. Also, plan ahead when cooking as part of a meal; you might need the stockpot for other dishes. And be careful when checking for doneness--the stand becomes hot during cooking, and the artichoke is precariously balanced inside. Secure the artichoke cooker with tongs or oven mitts as you remove a leaf with the other hand.

This simple innovation - a stand for the artichoke to sit in while you steam it - makes cooking an artichoke easy and no hassle. It eliminates the need to keep turning the artichoke over for an evenly cooked artichoke, and allows the steam to move upwards through the artichoke leaves. An affordable and functional addition to one's own kitchen, and a wonderful small token of appreciation to give as a gift.
