Product Description

The name Swing-A-Way, simply put, is an American classic. The original Swing-A-Way, introduced in 1938, was a wall-mounted can opener with a bracket that allowed the strong sturdy unit to swing back against the wall of a butler's pantry when not in use, hence the name. In 1945, the company pioneered a gear-driven cutting wheel that revolutionized can opening. In the 1950's the company launched the first heavy-duty, handheld can opener, the legendary Model 407 that incorporated the best features of the wall model. The rest is history. This Swingaway corkscrew was designed with the finest precision to easily open corked bottles. The spirals are made from hardened steel and will not bend or break and has been coated with vinyl for a smooth operation. This corkscrew works for both traditional and synthetic corks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, January 19, 2010

Seems to be made of cheesey pot metal. After opening about ten wine bottles successfully it failed when the screw went in at an angle, requiring more force to (attempt to) get the cork out. This snapped off the top sprockets on both handles rendering the unit useless. The sprockets - the little thingees sticking out on the left and right shoulders in the picture - are not substantial enough to take any torque.

The thing broke on the first bottle of wine we tried to open with it. Not well built. We returned it

5.0 out of 5 stars simple, effective, December 30, 2010

We have owned this corkscrew for about a year, and it continues to effectively open wine bottles without difficulty. The design is simple, so we need a separate tool to help remove foil, but it works every time.
