5.0 out of 5 stars I buy a new one every 15 years
This is a simple, well built device. They do wear out. I'm on my third one in 45 years.

1.0 out of 5 stars save your money - these are not as good as the old Swing-A-Ways
I can confirm that these aren't the Swing-A-Way openers of yesteryear that have inspired generations of loyal followers. The old Swing-A-Way openers were made in the USA and lasted for decades. I've bought two of the current models in the past 5 years based on the quality of the old openers I remember from growing up, and they've both been duds. Instead of decades, now...

Instead of decades, now they're wearing out in just a year or two - the knurled tooth on the wheels that grip the can rims give up the ghost much earlier than they should - probably softer steel from the new cheaper manufacturing. I can literally see a groove on the teeth on the wheel where the cans have worn out the teeth, and I can promise you that we eat way less canned food than my parents and grandparents did! I'm about to buy my third can opener in 5 years, and I can assure you that it WON'T be another one of these shoddy openers!!!! These are cheap steel, wears out in a year or two - don't waste your money!

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware Lightweight Swing-Aways Made in China, October 1, 2011
By
This review is from: Amco Swing-A-Way 407RD Portable Can Opener, Red (Kitchen)
I received this item 9/2011. It is made in China and is not heavy durable metal like the U.S.A. model. Since 2008, models 107, 407, 709 and 6090 appear to be made in China and are inferior to the original which had "Made in USA" stamped on the metal arm. I will no longer purchase Swing-a-Way brand due to quality issues.

I bought one of these for a christmas present for a family member, it was made in the U.S., and it was excellent. I then bought this one for myself, it is made in china, and the rivet was loose, I had to put it in the arbor press and press the rivet till the slack was taken up.I cannot recommend this product for that reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best can opener, January 6, 2009

I purchased this can opener to send to my parents in England as on a recent trip I found that neither of the two they had worked. Swing-A-Way can openers do not seem to be available there and in my opinion they are the best ones around - I wouldn't use any other.

I got this opener to replace the exact same one, which WAS stamped "Made in USA", and was probably 25 years old plus. (It was my mother's). The old one had begun to have real problems opening much of anything. The new one, not stamped "Made in USA" is a little looser at the rivet point, but other than that I can see no differences in quality. It works beautifully. Whether it will last 25+ years is another question, but just by looking at it, I would say that it will.

The Man says "hey, it successfully opened a bottle!" Obviously, he's not the cook, he's just opening beers!

After reading all the negative reviews, I almost didn't buy this thing. I honestly don't know what-all you are complaining about!

I've been through more can openers than I can count in the last few years. Then I remembered that my mom has had one of these my whole life and it's a workhorse. I saw some reviews that a few people got a cheap made-in-china version of the original, but I decided to take a risk and was rewarded with exactly what I was looking for. The thing weighs like 5 pounds (not quite), but you can tell as soon as you use it that it will never let you down. I'm glad I finally found a real can opener!

I can't believe I'm reviewing a CAN OPENER... but it really is that good! Makes a perfect, smooth, clean cutting edge around the top of the can. I've been using mine for months now and it works like the day it arrived! I've never had another can opener perform so well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Wonderful, June 20, 2010

Although the can opener I received is marked "made in China" and isn't quite as tightly riveted as I would have liked, it remains superior to any other opener in its class. After struggling with a Cook's Choice opener for the last two years as I researched what replacement I should select, this proves to be a major breakthrough that truly astounds. The ease with which it pierces the can and the smoothness of operation is amazing. I gasped when I turned the lever and experienced the satisfying revolution of the peach can, the even, unhesitating efficiency of the device itself. With my old opener it was taking up to two minutes of an agonizing struggle to achieve success and even then it was a ragged mess of twisted metal and slopped contents. With the Amco, it was under 15 seconds and it only took that long because I prolonged the process because I simply didn't want the superbness to come to an end. There was no jagged cut, only the laser like opening that left the container as if it were machined that way at the factory. The can remained level and spillage was minimal and that was due to my trembling excitement as I watched the function of the gears. It remains to be seen what the lifespan of this fantastic kitchen tool will be, but however long it remains in operation, each moment will be treasured, each can opening second remembered. For the price, this instrument is a value unequalled among can openers. You will find great pleasure in using the Amco at every opportunity and it will most definitely find a place of pride in your kitchen.
