4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product but cheaper elsewhere
I am very pleased with this can opener... easy to use, easy to clean. But you can get this at Bed Bath & Beyond for $5.99 (as I found out a few days after my order). Check your local store - this is one instance where Amazon was not the best deal.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT made in the USA
I purchased this item and received it yesterday (June 3rd, 2010). To clear up any inquiry, the can opener I received (Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH) is NOT made in the USA: it has no stamp indicating origin on the can opener (the old ones said Made in USA), and the package states "Made in China." So if you are looking for an authentic Swing-A-Way can opener made in America...

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT made in the USA, June 4, 2010

I purchased this item and received it yesterday (June 3rd, 2010). To clear up any inquiry, the can opener I received (Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH) is NOT made in the USA: it has no stamp indicating origin on the can opener (the old ones said Made in USA), and the package states "Made in China." So if you are looking for an authentic Swing-A-Way can opener made in America like I was, try somewhere else because Amco has sold this model overseas.

BTW I compared it to our existing Swing-A-Way, they are very similar in weight and feel, with the action between the gears on the China model being a bit looser/less precise than the old one. Can't say how it will hold up, but the quiet betrayal is disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Made-in-USA Should be Available Soon, May 5, 2011
This review is from: Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH Portable Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
I've just leaned that the John J Steuby Company of Hazelwood, Missouri, has purchased the equipment that the original, made-in-USA Swing-A-Ways were made on and plans to begin production in June of 2011, so the good ones should be available again soon. (Amazon, please carry the made-in-USA version!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten stars, June 15, 2001

Years ago my Dad said this was the one brand to buy. He said that anyone who lived in earthquake country or who love camping knew that a manual opener was a must.

This one is better than ever and even if you have problems with your hands like arthritis, you should be able to handle this opener. The cutting blade is easy to clean. I use a tooth brush and clean mine after each use and then pop in the dishwasher weekly.

5.0 out of 5 stars would give it more stars if I could, November 17, 2002

I have bought numerous can openers and used that cool electric one that claims to uncrimp the can but really just cuts the side of the lid. For my money, this is THE BEST, the EASIEST, and the most reliable can opener, and it works when the electricity is out or when you're camping.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Longer Made in USA - Poor Quality, March 2, 2011
This review is from: Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH Portable Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
Swing-A-Way can openers are no longer made in the USA and the quality shows. We bought one to replace the previous model that had lasted over 15 years. It was obvious from day one it wouldn't last more than a year. It was "stripping" cans within two weeks. We packed it up and sent it back to where it came from and got our money back.

Very dissapointing to see another quality American-Made product destroyed by the China Syndrome.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product no longer available. Boooo!!, November 30, 2010
This review is from: Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH Portable Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
This is the very best hand-held (portable) can opener ever made. I've seen more than a hundred of them and never-ever a broken one.

The problem is that you can no longer buy this except in thrift stores or flea markets. The new stuff currently sold under the same name is PURE JUNK. It is no longer made in USA and the quality of material and labor is seriously lacking. It still looks like a duck but it's only a quack.

I keep finding the real openers in thrift stores and always buy them after making sure they are made in USA. They usually range in price from ten to fifty cents and often have some rust on them due to dishwasher treatment. I clean them from dirt and grease with Windex or some soapy detergent, rinse them well with hot water and soak over night in Evapo-Rust. In the morning they are clean as new (see my picture attached).

If you are lucky to find one or two of these openers at a thrift store, give them a good degreasing cleaning, de-rusting, and never put them in a dishwasher. They will serve you a lifetime.

My husband bought this can opener when we first got married 12 years ago! We use it all the time. We have never even owned another one. It is still working wonderfully and I will definately buy another if this one ever wears out...which I doubt will happen any time soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Style, January 28, 2004
This review is from: Amco Swing-A-Way 407WH Portable Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
If you have cats, you might want to buy two. One for cat food and one for cooking. Never should the two be confused. :)

Now, this can opener is gear driven so you do have to work harder than if you purchased a automatic can opener. I just don't have room for one, so I prefer how easily these store in the drawer.

You can easily remove lids from any size can. The handles are comfortable and the precision-crafted stainless steel will last a long time.

Throw away your electric can opener or give it to the Goodwill. Nothing can compare to the Swing Away. It is easy to use, compact, and it WORKS! It is simply the best.
