5.0 out of 5 stars Soaring with Amelia
Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It takes whatever you know (or think you know)about Amelia and goes far beyond.

Susan Wels captures the person, her mindset, her feelings, her tenacity, her experiences, and the events of the day in such an entertaining and realistic way that reading every page is pure joy and wonder. I was captivated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not on my coffee table or gift list
The ONLY thing Amelia Earhart had in common with Charles Lindbergh was that they set their own goals and liked to do things on their own. This big, splashy homage distorts almost every episode of the aviatrix' aerial exploits. First woman to fly the Atlantic? Nonsense ... Amelia was a passenger participating in a publicity stunt. First woman to solo the Atlantic...

The reader gets an idea of what compelled Amelia to challenge herself as well as conventional wisdom. She was ahead of her time and yet so very present. The 300+ images make the words come alive even more.

Ms. Wels vast amount of research is clearly evident. Outstanding effort for an outstanding heroine.

I know what everyone on my list is getting for their holiday gift this year. And they will be as thrilled and enthralled with Amelia as I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for families, November 5, 2009
This review is from: Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It (Hardcover)
There are so few books that kids can enjoy with their parents -- here's one that is a sure winner. This gorgeous volume illustrates the life of a great role model and a fascinating historical figure. Written with passion, power, and polish, the reader really comes away with a sense of Amelia's inner life and what drove her to accomplish the impossible. It's a wonderful read, full of detail but not overwhelming. There are new, never before seen photos and new information about a woman whose fate remains a mystery to this day. But thanks to this book, her soul and personality are revealed in beautiful prose and striking illustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brava, Susan--and Amelia, October 20, 2009

This review is from: Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It (Hardcover)
Just as she did with her definitive book on the Titanic, Susan Wels brings to life a page of history that people only think they know. Beautifully designed and written, this book transforms an American icon into a fascinating, complex flesh-and-blood woman. Thanks to Susan's impressive research and the wealth of intriguing photographs and images, we get to know Amelia Earhart as a person as well as a pilot and to soar with her on adventures that seem no less remarkable now than they did then. For Amelia, the "thrill" came from flying. For earthbound readers, it comes from this splendid biography if a woman whose life took wing. Complimenti!

4.0 out of 5 stars Coffee table version of Earhart life history, May 15, 2010
Outstanding large book on the life of Amelia Earhart, with numerous illustrations, printed in China, on a deluxe type of paper, that lends itself well to excellent photograph reproduction. Although it has much detail, the author has left out footnotes, which is a must, when covering in such detail, the biography of an individual. This reader wanted to know the source of so many interesting facets of the life of Amelia Earhart. Several photos did not identify other individuals. And although the "theories" about her disappearance were glossed over at high speed, it was a good read.

A very beautifully made and designed book, highly evocative in the memorabilia and objects depicted from Amelia's life on earth and in the skies. Stunning photographs of Earhart herself. Just enough well-written story to satisfy anybody curious about what happened to her. Especially touching is the great mystery that remains in her disappearance, with the different attempts to find her body and her plane. It's a great adventure and a heart-breaking tale.

This book not only has all the history on the world's most famous female pilot, but also great pictures...many of which I had never seen before. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is a fan of Amelia Earhart or just flying in general.

I love this book. I found it at a book store for well over what I paid on Amazon. Thanks for providing a high quality item for a fraction of the cost from the bookstore!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it at the right price, October 4, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I feel the cover of this book is very weak and that it does little to lure in a potential buyer, that said, its contents are, happily, very much superior in every way. There are many pics here I had not previously seen and the textual content was good as well, one can find this book for under 10 dollars at close out book stores. A good value for the money.
