Book Description

October 13, 2009
She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to fly solo across the Pacific. But Amelia Earhart was also a photographer, poet, hospital worker, truck hauler, fashion designer, social worker, and student of chemistry, physics, and medicine—before she vanished mysteriously in her airplane over the Pacific Ocean in July 1937.

Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It is the first premium-quality illustrated biography to cover all facets of the icon’s life, featuring never-before-seen photographs, artifacts, letters, documents, and maps. It will include fascinating newly-revealed details about Amelia’s life and bring the story of her disappearance up-to-date with the latest information about the search for her remains in the Pacific Ocean. Above all, Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It vividly captures the essence of Amelia Earhart and her unorthodox, unflinching zeal for living life.

Amelia: The Thrill of It will publish to coincide with the major motion film, Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor.

"Not your usual biography, Wels combines not only Amelia Earhart's life story but also original documents, never-before-seen pictures, personal moments, and various artifacts being used to continue the search for her remains. Published to correspond with the movie release starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere, The Thrill of It celebrates Earhart's zest for life, her bravery, and everything that made her the icon that she has become."

Charleston Gazette, April 25, 2010
“Wels has given us a well-written and beautifully illustrated story of Amelia, her husband and others who were part of her many adventures…Wels’ text is exciting ..This book belongs in all libraries, including ones related to schools. One need not take Earhart’s risks, but certainly young women and men can gain inspiration from this volume.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Soaring with Amelia, October 14, 2009
Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It takes whatever you know (or think you know)about Amelia and goes far beyond.

Susan Wels captures the person, her mindset, her feelings, her tenacity, her experiences, and the events of the day in such an entertaining and realistic way that reading every page is pure joy and wonder. I was captivated.

The reader gets an idea of what compelled Amelia to challenge herself as well as conventional wisdom. She was ahead of her time and yet so very present. The 300+ images make the words come alive even more.

Ms. Wels vast amount of research is clearly evident. Outstanding effort for an outstanding heroine.

I know what everyone on my list is getting for their holiday gift this year. And they will be as thrilled and enthralled with Amelia as I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for families, November 5, 2009
There are so few books that kids can enjoy with their parents -- here's one that is a sure winner. This gorgeous volume illustrates the life of a great role model and a fascinating historical figure. Written with passion, power, and polish, the reader really comes away with a sense of Amelia's inner life and what drove her to accomplish the impossible. It's a wonderful read, full of detail but not overwhelming. There are new, never before seen photos and new information about a woman whose fate remains a mystery to this day. But thanks to this book, her soul and personality are revealed in beautiful prose and striking illustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brava, Susan--and Amelia, October 20, 2009

Just as she did with her definitive book on the Titanic, Susan Wels brings to life a page of history that people only think they know. Beautifully designed and written, this book transforms an American icon into a fascinating, complex flesh-and-blood woman. Thanks to Susan's impressive research and the wealth of intriguing photographs and images, we get to know Amelia Earhart as a person as well as a pilot and to soar with her on adventures that seem no less remarkable now than they did then. For Amelia, the "thrill" came from flying. For earthbound readers, it comes from this splendid biography if a woman whose life took wing. Complimenti!
