Grade 3-5?Amelia, first introduced in Amelia's Notebook (Tricycle, 1995), is at it again when she receives a new notebook for her 10th birthday. The engaging youngster proceeds to fill the pages with a variety of stories, personal commentary, and drawings. From the very beginning, readers are warned, "Do not turn any more pages or you will be struck down by the Mummy's curse!" Be brave and read on; the curse is short lived. Bored with her math homework, Amelia visualizes the numbers with distinct personalities. Getting marshmallows to stick and stay on the ceiling without being caught by her mother is another of the recorded activities. And on pages bordered with yellow caution tape, she writes about the tragic fire at her school. Amid her sorrow and anger, she suggests that each student place a little treasure in the new cement as a memento of special school remembrances. Gr. 3^-5. A sequel to Amelia's Notebook (1995), this purports to be another journal created by Amelia. Ten years old at last, Amelia finds that she has plenty to write about as she discusses the expressiveness of hands, the time she and her sister stuck marshmallows to the ceiling, her reactions to an arson fire at her school, and her discomfort when a friend wants to read her journal. Finally, she and the friend jointly write a story in the notebook. Naive ink-and-watercolor illustrations brighten the blue-lined, hand-printed pages. Many labels and side comments add to the fun. Children assigned journal writing in school sometimes see it as a chore. They may take heart from the freshness of Amelia's voice in this entertaining book. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Marissa Moss has been telling stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, but it wasn't very good and it never got published. She didn't try again until she was a grown-up, but since then she hasn't stopped.

The idea for the first Amelia's Notebook came from the notebook Moss kept when she was a kid. Amelia is a lot like her and the things that happen to Amelia really happened to Marissa (mostly).

Along with Amelia, Moss has created many characters and is especially drawn to history. Historical books allows her to imagine what it's like to be alive in a different place at a completely different time. And then there are the Max Disaster books which allow her to play with scientific experiments, inventions, and comic strips.

What I got for my b-day was all the Amelia books. This one was great. The fire at her school . . . the stories, her hopes from her best friend. . . . Anything you absolutely feel like you relate to is in the Amelia books. I suggest you read them all. Even grown-ups can read them. Amelia is the best of all!

This is a funny story, and you will never know what's going to happen next. Amelia tells absorbing stories in the book. For example in The Good luck Story. A girl found a penny. She picked it up for good luck and put it in her pocket, but the pocket had a hole. I'm not going to spoil the end of the story. In this journal it's Amelia's birthday. But I'm not going to tell you what she got for her birthday, either! Also something happened Amelia's school. I can't tell you any endings. Her best friend Leah asked if she can look in Amelia's notebook. Amelia didn't know what to say to Leah, yes or no. In the last part it will tell you. So that means you have to buy the book to see what happens. I give this book four stars because a few parts were kind of boring, but most of the book was really good.

"Amelia Writes Again" is one of my favorite Amelia books! This 10-year-old girl writes stories-fictional and non-fictional-in her notebook. "Amelia Writes Again" is great because you really learn a lot about how Amelia thinks and feels. Also, there is more than one even going on in this book, from a drastic change in her school to having a fight with her friend to becoming better friends with that friend. You will definatly enjoy this book, along with the rest of the Amelia series.
