Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6--Amelia describes her agonizing first days in middle school in her latest hand-written journal. Colorful sketches of lockers, teachers, students, and the mazelike building are just some of the visual details that readers will scrutinize as Amelia encounters intimidating eighth graders and faces the question of where to sit in the cafeteria. Worst of all, her English teacher, Mr. Lambaste, hates her. Big sister Cleo confesses that she had played a mean trick on Mr. Lambaste and now Amelia's attempt at being nice to him lands her in detention. As her other classes encourage her to look at art and science differently, she also learns to look at life and people differently. When she finally writes Mr. Lambaste a story about getting to know people and seeing them for who they are inside, Amelia realizes she has found a way to see through the personas of the cool kids and has taught her teacher something as well. Readers who have just started middle school will relate to and sympathize with Amelia; younger students will feel as if they are getting the inside scoop on what to expect when they get there.–Kristine M. From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Finally entering middle school, Amelia looks forward to having a locker and changing classes, but dreads attending the same school as her eighth-grade sister, Cleo. Worse, though, is her English teacher, Mr. Lambaste, who inexplicably picks on her. Nothing Amelia does helps, until she tries looking at things differently and discovers value in communication and honesty. Both insightful and entertaining, Amelia's first-person narrative rings true as she navigates unfamiliar terrain and finds unexpected rewards, such as discovering a love of science. Like other books in the ongoing series, this one features a handwritten format; colorful, cartoonlike illustrations; and charming doodles with descriptive asides to creatively portray Amelia's experiences, emotions, and often-witty musings on school life and the people around her. Amelia fans will grab this, but the book stands well alone thanks to its engaging protagonist and a sympathetic portrayal of new-school challenges that will strike a familiar chord among children. More About the Author

Marissa Moss has been telling stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, but it wasn't very good and it never got published. She didn't try again until she was a grown-up, but since then she hasn't stopped.

The idea for the first Amelia's Notebook came from the notebook Moss kept when she was a kid. Amelia is a lot like her and the things that happen to Amelia really happened to Marissa (mostly).

Along with Amelia, Moss has created many characters and is especially drawn to history. Historical books allows her to imagine what it's like to be alive in a different place at a completely different time. And then there are the Max Disaster books which allow her to play with scientific experiments, inventions, and comic strips.

5.0 out of 5 stars This notebook rings true!, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Amelia's 6th-Grade Notebook (Amelia's Notebook) (Hardcover)
My adolescent daughter and I both LOVE the Amelia books, and her new venture into middle school is one of the best yet. We can both relate to Amelia's poignant farewell to the simple and comforting joys of elementary school: "no more playing teatherball, no more Valentine's Day partie with cupcakes, no more gluing beans and noodles to constuction paper..." We empathize with her anxiety about her mean English, social studies and homeroom teacher, Mr. Lambaste. We feel her fear of the intimidating 8th (and seventh and sixth graders!), and her annoyance with the dysfunctional drinking fountains, as well as a host of other hilariously-depicted middle-school annoyances, large and small. But most of all, we once again applaud Amelia's knack for problem-solving, her overall love of life, her positivity, even in the face of setbacks, her wise and funny perceptions about life, and her wonderful storytelling and drawings!!! This is a perfect book for anyone facing sixth grade, experiencing sixth grade, or looking back upon that intensely felt period in between childhood and the teen years. Bravo Marissa Moss and Bravo Amelia!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Amelia's 6th-Grade Notebook (Amelia's Notebook) (Hardcover)
This book would have really helped me when I started 6th grade. Unfortunately, it was last year! But its portrayal of school life is TERRIFIC. My art teacher did/does the same exact things that Amelia's does! But that NASTY teacher- ugh...
