Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A less than fantastic flight. Since Amelia loves airplanes, she builds one and goes ``. . . for a little spin.'' She flies around the world in less than a day, but nothing happens, and the girl never interacts with her surroundings. The illustrations are colorful, clear, and suggestive of the country being represented. Each page includes a world map inset highlighting her route. The places look inviting, but the aviatrix is set on flying, not sightseeing. The involuntary association with Amelia Earhart is bothersome since one can't help remembering that the original Amelia never came home. This and the fact that the book lacks a story line makes it unsatisfying. --Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

From Kirkus Reviews

Amelia, first seen reading a book about planes, builds a one-seater just her size, modeled on her simple red toy. Off she goes on an alliterative journey (``She breezed through Brazil, and she got a kick out of Kenya''), with her progress around the world recorded on inset maps and in representative--if somewhat stereotypical--scenes for each country, arriving home in time for dinner and a bedtime story about rockets. The role-modeling is rather obviously deliberate, but bracing: Amelia is an imaginative, take-charge child. Meanwhile, Bursik makes a strong debut with her crisp, clean illustrations, the gentle modeling of the animals Amelia sees blending nicely with decoratively stylized plants and backdrop landscapes with minimal detail. A map highlighting countries along the route rounds out the story. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars A toddler, his mom, and his dad love it!, June 3, 2000

This review is from: Amelia's Fantastic Flight (An Owlet Book) (Paperback)
Despite the "reading level" of age 4-8, and despite the trade journals' implication that it's for elementary school classes, my 18-month-old son has insisted on many readings in the first few days since we got it home. We love the rich pictures (rich both in coloring and in detail to comment on); the alliterative text that rolls right off your tongue, even the 4th time in as many minutes; and the geographical information--which, I am ashamed to say, I am learning from at age 35! And mom loves the great girl role model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, March 29, 2000

Amelia's Fantastic Flight is a joy to read with your kids. The colorful pictures and the rhyming pattern take kids on a wonderful journey in Amelia's airplane. The different countries and the maps instill some great knowledge to younger children that will help them in later years. The tale of little Amelia is simply fantastic. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone! At the end when she is reading the book with the space shuttle helped my little one imagine her own adventures as an astronaut!

Teachers, if you want to turn a lesson on map skills into a fun activity, this is the book to do it with. Easy text with great illustrations (map inserts in every page) can be turned into a "map chase" around the world in the classroom.
