Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–7—Reluctantly agreeing to go to Camp Runamucka once she discovers that her friend Carly will also be there, Amelia is surprised to find that it is so much fun. Swimming, archery, hiking, and singing around the campfire are enjoyable pastimes, but the most fun of all is being selected as a cartoonist for the camp newspaper. Amelia is also pleasantly surprised to find that a second cartoonist is not only cute, but he also seems to like her. However, she soon learns that Carly has a crush on Luke, too, and the tension mounts as the two friends try to work out their problem. The angst and arguments over the boy lean toward the repetitious, but preteen girls will be interested in the resolution. Colorful illustrations add to the book's appeal. This is another entertaining "notebook" from a seasoned writer.—Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

More About the Author

Marissa Moss has been telling stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, but it wasn't very good and it never got published. She didn't try again until she was a grown-up, but since then she hasn't stopped.

The idea for the first Amelia's Notebook came from the notebook Moss kept when she was a kid. Amelia is a lot like her and the things that happen to Amelia really happened to Marissa (mostly).

Along with Amelia, Moss has created many characters and is especially drawn to history. Historical books allows her to imagine what it's like to be alive in a different place at a completely different time. And then there are the Max Disaster books which allow her to play with scientific experiments, inventions, and comic strips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, January 28, 2009

This review is from: Amelia's Itchy-Twitchy, Lovey-Dovey Summer at Camp Mosquito (Amelia's Notebook) (Hardcover)
These books by Marissa Moss are some of the few that I can give directly to my daughter and NOT have to preview. They are delightful, funny, and portray the feelings of a teenage girl. I hope the author will remain true to the series and not SMUT them up.

My daughter brings this book to school with her in case she has free time. To say that this book is a miracle is putting it mildly. I love the Amelia books because they excite my 10 year old daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Summer Camp from a Tween Perspective, October 21, 2011
This review is from: Amelia's Itchy-Twitchy, Lovey-Dovey Summer at Camp Mosquito (Amelia's Notebook) (Hardcover)
Super cute book. Love the summer camp theme. Some of my favorite lines: "I was ready to fight mom on this one - she can't make me have fun...I mean there's no such thing as forced fun!". I also enjoyed the Measure of Muleness graph :) The comparison of camp packing lists - Carly's (friends) to her Amelia's mom's was so funny..."any list that starts with underwear can't be good". In fact, Carly's list actually looked like it could have been my daughter's - starting with nail polish and ending with lip gloss! The list of bad camp food cracked me up including baked beans (no bean is good unless it's a jelly bean) and hobo stew (another name for left over mush). I relived one of my worst childhood (and beyond) fears in this book - the creepiness of swimming in dark water. The author doesn't forget to cover GIRL DRAMA driven by adoration of the same boy! Her signs of a crush clues cracked me up. She crawled inside the tween's head - 4 sure. Finally, don't forget to read the notes on the conversion table in the back. Cute. Super cute - I liked this book!
