Grade 6 Up. Dramer's effort is framed by the African-American experience, rather than the Native American, which is a real anomaly for this series. Topics include Crispus Attucks, the relationship between escaped slaves and the Native peoples of the southeast who gave them shelter, slavery of blacks by the Five Civilized Tribes, black cowboys and scouts, Indian involvement on both sides of the Civil War, the status of black Indians under both tribal and federal law, and biographical sketches of several notable African Americans of the late 19th century?but no Indian leaders. Black-and-white photographs add little information, but provide some visual support. This is a solid, basic introduction to a little-considered area of American history and contemporary life, the relationships among Native Americans and Black Americans. This is a solid piece of work, well researched and well written. Although the series is designed for younger readers, this work is intellectually respectable (and engaging) for adults interested in making an initial exploration of the topic. The author is breaking some relatively new ground in exploring the implications of race, color, and ethnicity (as well as social class) and the blending of races and ethnicities in contemporary culture. The format/design engages the eye, and the pictures are well-chosen and "worth a thousand words." I recommend it highly. (4 stars rather than five, only because it is a simple introduction, rather than a full-blown study.)
