Gr. 7-10. Here's an example of what happens when solid, well-written information is poorly formatted. The Decades of American History series treats each 10-year period thoroughly. This volume begins with a look back at the Roaring Twenties, then goes on to discuss such topics as the stock market crash; the presidencies of Hoover and Roosevelt; bloody labor and farm disputes; the entertainment industry; and the growing storm in Europe as the U.S. struggled with neutrality and readied itself for war. The text is inclusive yet brisk, and sidebars do an impressive job of extending the information. What frustrates is the typeface: the wealth of information is printed in small type on thin paper. The black-and-white photos are numerous and excellent, but the design is often bewildering. For instance, a page detailing Hoover's policies is bordered by information about the Art Deco movement. Despite format problems, report writers will find plenty here, and this will bolster history collections. A glossary and an extensive bibliography are appended. Books on the other decades of the twentieth century are also available.
