BLACK HISTORY WONDER,
By
This review is from: America I AM Legends: Rare Moments and Inspiring Words (Hardcover)
IT'S A BOOK YOU MUST HAVE. THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK SURPASS ALL MY BOOKS ON BLACK HISTORY. THE PICTURES AND INFORMATION WERE BEAUTIFUL AND TO THE POINT. THE CHILDREN WERE ABLE TO ABSORB THE INFORMATION QUICKLY. I AM SURE THE ACTUAL EXHIBIT WOULD BE AN EXCITING ADVENTURE FOR CHILDREN. SCHOOLS EVERYWHERE SHOULD ADD THIS BOOK TO THEIR BLACK HISTORY MONTH COLLECTIONS. I HOPE TO SEE THE EXHIBIT MYSELF THIS SPRING. I HOPE IT COMPARE TO THE BOOK.

This is a beautifully illustrated book. The photos are both in black and white as well as color. It has a nicely descriptive foreword by Tavis Smiley and has about one paragraph of quotes/comments on each person featured in the book. The seventy-eight legends featured are categorized by either, politics, entertainment, sports, media, everyday people, etc. The best part of the book is the Legend Biographies which obviously is a short biography on each person highlighted within the book. The book is definately pictorial than words and if one knows African American history than it would be more of a reassurence of this knowledge. For those who are seeking a quick synopsis in terms of how these African Americans have made an imprint on the United States of America it would definately provide an education through pictures. I would recomend this book for all Americans.

Just a bunch of pictures,

I'm still trying figure why they decided to put Marvin Gaye's picture on the front cover of this book. This is not a very good book. It's just a bunch of pictures of famous African Americans along with famous quotes(in very large font) from them. That's it. A good book for children(lot's of pictures) but certainly not for adults. This book looks like it was put together by photojournalists instead of serious scholars of the Black experience. Note that Tavis Smiley wrote the foreword for this book. Tavis is a journalist. I'll stick to my copies of:
"A Pictorial History of Black Americans" by Langston Hughes (ISBN 0517550725) "Black Magic: A Pictorial History of the African-American in the Performing Arts" by Langston Hughes (ISBN 0306804069) "Black Hollywood: The Black Performer in Motion Pictures" by Gary Null (ISBN 0806509082) |
