Darryl Roberts provides multiple concrete examples of the many ways in which American society undermines the healthy emotional development and self-esteem of girls, the future women of America. Most sensationally, the film begins with the story of a supermodel, who happens to be 12 and pre-pubescent, the female ideal with which our country has become obsessed, that all women want to be and all men want to 'have' (because it isn't about partnership, it is about possession and status). Interviews are included with young men on their expectations of women. It is all extremely horrifying.

Once the psychological and emotional damage of this image is established, the documentary continues with the dangers one takes in pursuing that unattainable ideal. Liposuction is revealed as one of the most deadly surgeries available. Cosmetics are filled with toxins, many of which have been banned in Europe due to their danger, which are not revealed to unsuspecting consumers because they are proprietary trade secrets.

You have to see this movie, and buy it for the parents of everyone with a daughter. Ideally, boys should see it too, since it is the expectations they gain from the media that encourage girls to attempt to mutilate themselves to become the impossible.

I found this documentary to be enlightening and I'm a 40-something Mom of a 6 year old daughter. It has really made me re-think a couple of the comments that my daughter has made recently. On one occasion, she said that she needed to lose a little weight so her teachers would like her even more. I had no idea what made her say such a thing but I assured her that she was not fat, by any stretch of the imagination. Weeks later, she made the comment that her stomach was too big and that she hated it. I didn't realize, until this documentary, that she was taking my comments about my own stomach and taking on that negative self-image. Although I've dealt with weight issues most of my life, my stomach is the only thing I ever complain about. It's the only thing I truly despise about my own body. Now I realize that I need to be conscious of this and be more cognizant of what I say about myself because I never want her to have a negative self-image.

Teenagers, girls in particular, really need to watch this documentary and realize that there is no "perfect girl" out there. Even the ones that they see in magazines and on TV, aren't "real". They are airbrushed and thinned out, their body parts stretched by a computer program and made to look perfect. It is unrealistic for any girl or woman to think that they have to, or even can, look like these stick thin, beautiful models. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and forms. More importantly, true beauty comes from within. This documentary did a very good job of pointing out the how fake the modeling industry really is and the tricks they use to create a false perfection. Young girls really need to be aware this.

This video is not what the cover advertises. It is the story of a young girl pushed by her mother into a brief highly touted fling with modeling. the actual story is a good one but not what is advertised/

Even if you know a lot about America's unhealthy fixation on how we look, see the 2007 documentary AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL. Director/host Darryl Roberts admits making perfect the enemy of good when he soured on a girlfriend because she was what he saw as only attractive as opposed to very attractive. On his journey to figure out what he was thinking, Roberts introduces us to others with preoccupations about appearance in this fresh, funny, and at times unnerving film.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL's subjects range from men who almost seem to brag about their shallow standards of beauty to grade school-age girls already interested in what they should weigh. An unusually tall middle school girl goes from being called "giraffe" by other children to becoming a successful model only to find the latter is not exactly an environment where they love you just the way you are. Then there's the female television host who trusts a self-proclaimed plastic surgeon who trained for her operation on a tomato.

The late advertising titan David Ogilvy said an ad campaign's success depends on finding the right appeal. If those marketing cosmetics, diets, and plastic surgery achieve that by making people self-conscious about their appearance, perhaps AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL can do some un-selling with its appeal, the realization that we must see one another not as the sum of our measurements but as whole individuals.

Am the Beautiful is an eye opener into what we do to ourselves and our daughters (and a dis-service to our sons) in the name of consumer ignorance and the $ bottom line. Be awake. Be aware.

Good film that does support the obvious. America is consumed with beauty, and with the advent of being able to manipulate images gives unobtainable goals for our young girls. When six year old girls are worried that a new pair of jeans will make the "ass look big." we are not doing something right. (my granddaughter's comment)
