V( stipes of an ancient people and prominent marks of their civilization are disclosed not only from the northern lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, bat are found to extend through every inhabitable section of modern Mexico, Gautemala, Yucatan, Honduras, and in nearly every part of Central America. The race who held empire over that vast domain at the time of the conquest have been denominated Aztecs. They were the humble and willing subjects of the great and powerful Montezuma, whose life and glittering glory went out amidst the carnage produced by the Spanish conquerors. The Aztecs were not the only race of ancient people that have lived, flourised, and occupied the territory where now stands Mexico. Another race preceded them, to which the name of Toltec has been given. They have left monuments far more imposing, and which presents a higher civilization than any other people who have come after them. In the southern part of Mexico great and melancholy ruins of majestic temples and of large cities attest the former existence of a numerous and cultivated people; but who they were and whither they went is as much of a mystery to us as that which surrounds the Mound Builders, who have left such numerous and prominent works in the great and fertile valleys of the United State-;, More than three hundred years ago, when the Spanish armies first invaded Mexico, scores of ancient and abandoned structures were discovered which seemed to indicate a higher state of development than those occupied by the Aztecs, but who the builders were was unknown to the Mexican people and was without a reliable tradition.
