Editorial Reviews

In 1979 America (Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley) were at the height of their popularity and had just released "Silent Letter" their first album as a duo following the departure of fellow founding member Dan Peek. Acclaimed Australian filmmaker Peter Clifton captured the band at their concert in New York's Central Park and then followed them across to California where he filmed them in the studio and on location. All of this footage was combined to make America "Live In Central Park".

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun video to watch for nostalgic reasons!! March 9, 2006
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the video for the music (audio is out of whack) and the scenes of 1970's New York!! Brought back alot of memories!! Unless you are a fan of America i wouldn't recommend this video for its audio quality. But all in all... a fun video if you want to relive your youth!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good video but awful tiny audio! August 6, 2005
Somebody tell me if I got a defective copy because all of the audio tracks are awful! The show is very well filmed but the sound is tiny. No matter what I did to my amp in terms of volume and equalization, the sound was small and distant. Turning it up did not make it any better. The crowd noises were almost louder than the band and the drums are almost non-existent. Stick with the 1999 German "America in concert" DVD, that has much, much better audio.

Skip this, I don't know what audio remixing they did to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMERICA live, fabulous June 29, 2005
This is a fabulous concert done by AMERICA in 1979 not long after their transition to a duel. The songs are magnificent & the energy unlimited. They still had their long hair which was soon to be cut as the 80's approached. HORSE WITH NO NAME, SISTER GOLDEN HAIR, TIN MAN, DAISY JANE are just some of the carefully woven songs that are played. GERRY articulates as no one else can do in songs such as ANOTHER TRY, I NEED YOU & HERE, on piano or on the 12 string guitar. DEWEY sings his heart out on VENTURA HIGHWAY, TIN MAN, SANDMAN as well as on the mega hit, HORSE WITH NO NAME. GERRY BECKLEY & DEWEY BUNNELL shine brighter than the nearest star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great concert DVD July 29, 2006
By A Fan
The audio sounds fine to me, but I don't have an expensive sound system hooked-up to my TV so that may make a difference. A high energy performance while they were still in their prime. Since the tour was promoting their just released "Silent Letter" album, it contains the only live recordings of several songs from that album including "Only Game In Town," "Foolin", and "All Night". Plus it contains many of their classics like "Horse With No Name", "Ventura Highway", and "Sister Golden Hair." It is like traveling back in time to 1979.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible audio on this DVD November 9, 2005
I have purchased many DVDs and VHS music videos. I just love to watch and listen to the music performers, but this audio is the poorest excuse for a music video that I have ever seen. Save your money until they come out with something better.

3.0 out of 5 stars America - Live at Central Park 1979 October 23, 2009
I'm not a huge fan of America but I like several of their songs. The good part of this DVD is that it includes all of America's "big" songs up until 1979. The bad part of it is the directing and camera work. The director spent too much time panning the audience, showing people roller skating in Central Park, showing the stage from far off and a number of other distractions while America was playing. If I wanted to see that I'd go to the park myself. Nevertheless, it is worth getting if you like America since it was filmed in 1979 (of historical significance) and they do show America doing many of their hits with close-ups of the band.

2.0 out of 5 stars I expected more January 27, 2007
I love this band and was very excited to get this DVD. When I watched it, however, I was disappointed. The sound quality is terrible, but that is probably due to the film's age. It was enjoyable, though, to see Gerry and Dewey at the height of their fame and the prime of their career. There are other America DVDs out there that provide a much better listening and viewing experience. Save your money and buy one of those.
