Book Description

December 17, 2001

When tragedy strikes, people desperately search for answers. On September 11, 2001, our Nation began that desperate search. There wasn't a city, a family, or a single person that survived unaffected by the horrific events of that infamous day. Best-selling author and pastor Max Lucado points to the only real answer: Prayer. Derived from Max's prayer for the Nation in response to the attacks, America Looks Up explores how we should pray in these uncertain and confusing days.

More About the Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

All this success has drawn more than a little attention to a previously low-profile Texas author and minister. Lucado has been featured in a wide range of media, including "USA Today," "Larry King Live," and "NBC Nightly News." He has spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast before the President of the United States. He has traveled with internationally renowned musicians as a special speaker on their music tours, such as the highly successful "Come Together & Worship Tour" (sponsored by Chevrolet) with Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day.

Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

Are you feeling anxious or depressed about the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001? You don't have to continue to be afraid or depressed, feeling like there's no hope, because there IS - JESUS! In this very comforting book, beloved author, Max Lucado shows you that God IS in control! Terrorists make things wrong, but God makes things right again! And just like God accepted the victims of September 11th into everlasting life and love and peace in Heaven, you can feel peace again too, by reading this book. It shows you why we have nothing to fear, after all "If God is for us, who can be against us?" This book will renew your faith in God, and thus, will renew your hopes and dreams and inspire you to reach for them. Don't worry, if you slip...God will be there. Nothing can happen to you that God can't take care of. God Bless!

4.0 out of 5 stars Restores balance at this critical time., April 28, 2002
By
Andrew Edwin Jenkins (Birmingham, AL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: America Looks Up (Hardcover)
I was encouraged that this book speaks more to the sovereignty of God, than it does the sovereignty of America. Don't misunderstand, I am pro-America, proud to be here... but, the danger is that we equate Americana with the Kingdom of God.

Lucado, the word-smith that he is, draws us back to our Heavenly Father in this work. The message he suggests: "God is pro-you." (As opposed to God is for-America). That's a complex idea to communicate, it seems. And, Lucado's inspirational work here focuses us in a much needed away.

Another book to read... of a much different audience... Saint Augstine's The City of God (note, though, Lucado's work is inspirational and Augustine is somewhat academic in that work).

5.0 out of 5 stars Such promises...., July 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: America Looks Up (Hardcover)
This book is terrific! Max Lucado has a way with words that is amazing, simple, easy to understand. The anxiety associated with the death and burial of our innocence is so relieved by his words. This book has only 81 pages, but every page is filled with the promises of the Word of God. Such comforting methods and suggestions he makes for dealing with the depression or anxiety of 9/11. And the size is a little smaller than 5 X 7, so it is very convenient to take along anywhere. If you (or anyone you know) is still struggling with the fear, uneasiness, depression, or anxiety associated with those tragic events, get this book! I cannot recommend it highly enough.
