5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My daughter brought this book home from her school library. I was surprise since she is only in 1st grade. But I read it to her and was refreshingly surprised. I was proud to read it to her and also be reminded of what this country is truly about.
I would recommend it to any school librarian for her library or any parent for their home.

1.0 out of 5 stars Patriotic Drivel
This is exactly the sort of "USA - Number 1" drivel that kids already get plenty of. There are about 1,000 books just like this one, all telling children how wonderful and special the U.S. is, without ever acknowledging that problems might actually exist -- or that someone might not agree with this narrow interpretation of our "superiority." The author even manages to...

5.0 out of 5 stars What a book!, June 26, 2007

This book was written to explain America to British schoolchildren who asked, "What is America really like?" The author and illustrator do a fabulous job of capturing the essence of the cities, countryside, landmarks and geographical features. I highly recommend this book to all elementary level teachers and parents throughout the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, October 9, 2006
This review is from: America Is... (Hardcover)
I love this book! It's beautifully illustrated and really breaks it down in language children understand. Only a cynic wouldn't like this book. I have bought several copies as gifts for my kid's friends and everybody loves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book..., March 17, 2009

I was searching for books to teach my 2 1/2 year old about America. This book is perfect, I would suggest it up through 8 years. The illustrations are beautiful and it introduces the concept of our country as a whole and each states unique addition. It include the Pledge and instills a sense of pride in one's country. I highly suggest adding it to your home library.

There are about 1,000 books just like this one, all telling children how wonderful and special the U.S. is, without ever acknowledging that problems might actually exist -- or that someone might not agree with this narrow interpretation of our "superiority." The author even manages to discuss Native Americans in a pro-U.S. way! This book is really of little use to anyone except those studying America's myopic fascination with its own distorted image of itself. To say that the name "America" means "freedom" to people all over the world, in this day and age, is wishful thinking in the extreme...
