Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–This volume looks at America's car culture and the ways in which it affects the lives of our citizens, how driving can be made safer, regulating youth driving, and future transportation needs. Specific articles debate both sides of questions concerning SUVs, urban sprawl, cars' contribution to Americans' freedom, seat-belt laws, the strictness of drunk-driving laws, government-imposed fuel economy standards, and public transportation. The last chapter considers the relative merits of biofuels, diesel, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The writing varies from excellent to mere polemic. Authors' affiliations are provided and include prominent organizations, governmental agencies, think tanks, publications, associations, and businesses that study or have an interest in autos. Offset boxes provide occasional background information or supporting statistics for the writers' arguments. Despite some sloppy editing, this book offers a solid collection of timely articles.–Jeffrey A. French, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH
